Pros: Generic version is very inexpensive
Cons: It wasn't included with the camera in the first place

I have the budget-priced generic Chinese knockoff, for which I paid just $2.94, including shipping. At this price, one cannot afford not to have one. It is an absolute must-have accessory that provides nice flexibility to be able to use commodity AA batteries, especially when those batteries perform better than the D-Li109 battery pack that came with my K30. For the record, this adapter and Eneloops are a match made in heaven.

The adapter and four AA batteries also give the camera a little extra heft, which helps counterbalance a heavier lens for slightly improved handling.

I have never had a genuine Pentax version of this adapter so I cannot make any valid comparisons between it and my generic one, but for the price I paid (less than 1/13th the retail price of the OEM version), I wouldn't think twice about buying another one to replace it if it broke. And it also makes me wonder why in the world Pentax didn't just go ahead and include on with every camera that could use it.

Pros: very useful tool
Cons: expensive

K-30 to use it. 1000 to 1200 shots Sanyo Eneloop 2000mAh 4 AA batteries, while the D-Li109 only around 300. (Eneloop I can spend the Conrad Charger)
It is unfortunate that it can not be used for newer cameras.

Pros: Allows use of AA batteries which can be found everywhere
Cons: Hugely, massively, gigantically overpriced

I got one of these for free when a friend dropped his Pentax camera and bought a Nikon as a replacement. I get greater battery life from 4 AA batteries than I do from the D-Li109 that came with my KR, so I love this thing. However I also have two of the cheap Chinese imitations that came from eBay, so I can compare them. It is obvious that the genuine Pentax item is better made, it has gold plated contacts and much stronger plastic, while the Chinese item seems more delicate and has plain silver-coloured contacts. All that said the Chinese imitations perform just as well and are a tiny fraction of the price. If you're clumsy you may be better off with the Pentax original, but at list price or even at twenty percent off the Pentax item is hugely overpriced. I'd give this item a better rating if it were half the price, and even then I'd consider it a bit overpriced. on eBay the cheap Chinese ones are all less than $10 US, some are as little as $4.

Also why is it so much more in the UK than in the US? At the time of writing the UK list price is £39.99, which is roughly equivalent to $64 US dollars.

Pros: Adds an extra way of powering the camera
Cons: Insertion/removal of batteries and holder can be a bit annoying

I wouldn't be caught dead without this. A wonderful emergency accessory, particularly as the cameras it's designed for don't allow for a battery grip.

Ignoring the downside of AAs vs. camera-specific batteries, the main issue I have with the holder itself is that I find the batteries to sometimes be a bit difficult to insert, often wanting to go in slightly angled, and it fits quite snug in the battery compartment. This means that when it comes time to remove it it doesn't pop up when the retaining clip is moved, like the LI-109 does, instead requiring a bit of gentle tapping.

Pros: Gives additional battery option and backup for main battery
Cons: Reduced performance (at least on alkaline batteries), somewhat overpriced

The AA battery holder D-BH109 is a great additional battery option for the K-r. It makes it possible to use the camera with 4 AA batteries, which can be critical when the main rechargeable battery runs out. Since AA batteries are easy to find, this is an ideal backup option, especially if you're traveling to a location where you can't recharge your main battery and only AA and other common cells are available.

However, I did note a reduction in AF and shooting performance when alkaline batteries are used (I haven't had a chance to test lithium or NiMH batteries). Furthermore, the battery holder is somewhat overpriced--I feel that a more reasonable price is US$20-25, instead of the $40 MSRP or the $34 I paid for it.

In any case, the D-BH109 opens up a battery option that can help you keep shooting when it matters most.

Pros: very useful
Cons: expensive, hard to find

Great item! I can use standard AA batteries if original battery is empty! Camera works normal, great alternative to another battery for me because I have 3x 4pcs AA rechargeable batteries (for flash and another camera powerd by 4AA) so this adapter is very, very useful.
