120 Meters of Terror

DA* 16-50 Giveaway Entry #14

By Heie in It's Good to Be Fearless on Apr 30, 2013

My name is Porfìrio Azevedo, I am 27 years old, and I am an advanced amateur photographer. I apologize in advance for obvious grammatical errors as I learned english mostly by watching TV shows and movies. You said that you can be as long as you feel necessary, so I will tell you how my life as a photographer started, up to this point where I found out that it is indeed good to be fearless.

I wanted to be a computer engineer as I grew up with game consoles (Master System, Sega Genesis/Megadrive, and Super Nintendo and Playstation). Later I got a real PC and then it was all about internet and learning how computers, networks, and video games worked. They were my best friends instead of people!

The fact that I grew up "alone" made me into something I like to call a lone wolf - I like to go unnoticed and I don't like much attention. I started learning photography on my own just about 3 years ago when I saw an episode of The Discovery Channel's Myth Busters in which they tried to debunk a myth about developing film with household chemicals. I couldn't believe this was real so I got ahold of a Pentax P30 35mm film camera to test that out, hardly I knew that was the moment I became a Pentaxian...

Fearless in Inner-City Kingston

DA* 16-50 Giveaway Entry #1

By Heie in It's Good to Be Fearless on Apr 3, 2013

Editorial note: this article is the first of a series of finalist submissions in a recent competition hosted by forum member Heie.  For this competition, participants were asked to submit 3 photos or a video showing what "It's good to be fearless" means in the context of the participant's photography.

Hello, it's my pleasure to enter this contest - and to thank Heie for such a classy and kind offer. Very "Pentax" of you.

I work for a non-profit organization active in international development, and I enter Heie`s contest as I pack for a working trip in two days to rural Cameroon, in Central Africa.

These photos were taken last spring in Kingston, Jamaica. More specifically, in the inner-city neighbourhoods of Trivoli Gardens and Trench Town. While tourists may know only one side of the Caribbean country – the turquoise seas, rum and reggae – it is a diverse land ranging from bucolic rural rhythms to blue mountain vistas to edgy urban beats.

My Version of Fearless

DA* 16-50 Giveaway Entry #11

By Heie in It's Good to Be Fearless on Apr 20, 2013

First off, I would like to say that I think this is a wonderful contest and completely generous of you to do this. I do not have a large post history here on the Pentax Forums, however I spend a lot of time here reading and have found this site extremely invaluable to me. So thank you!

In the fall of 2012 I decided to make a big change in my life. I resigned from a position that was going nowhere and decided to take a journey that has changed me in many ways. As an introvert, a creature of habit and comfort, someone who is used to shying away from the unknown and unfamiliar, I took a chance to do something completely out of my comfort zone both psychologically and photographically.

Fearlessly Flying in Tandem

DA* 16-50 Giveaway Entry #18

By Heie in It's Good to Be Fearless on May 13, 2013

Wow, I can only imagine owning a DA* 16-50 F/2.8 lens.

Sometimes I am privileged to fly with T-6 pilots during training or flyovers to honor our veterans. I donate all my pictures I take to these amazing pilots that fly to honor those that fought for our country. They have the expense and responsibility of maintaining their T-6 aircraft, and mine is the pleasure to hand them pictures of their flying.
