Nik Collection Now a Free Download

Google has announced that its Nik Collection of desktop-post processing software is becoming freeware, effective immediately.  This means that anyone can now download and use the software for free, and customers who purchased Nik products in 2016 will receive a full refund.

The Nik Collection consists of the following software:

  • Analog Efex Pro — Darkroom effects
  • Color Efex Pro — Color filters
  • Silver Efex Pro — Black-and-wite conversion
  • Viveza — Image enhancement
  • HDR Efex Pro — High dynamic range images
  • Sharpener Pro — Detail enhancement
  • Dfine — Noise reduction

These programs can help photographers expand their creativity by going above and beyond the tools found in core editors such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom.  With a host of one-click actions and handy tools, Nik is also a viable alternative and/or supplement to the Topaz suite of editing plugins.

Shortly after Goolge acquired Nik in 2012, the price of the Nik Collection was halved to $149.  Now that Nik desktop collection is free, Google has announced that it will focus its long-term development efforts on a different market entirely, namely photo editing applications on mobile platforms.
