The PentaxForums "2 million post" Giveaway

Win a Pentax K-30 kit! · 08-13-2012 · By PF Staff in Pentax Events

In celebration of the forum's 2 million post milestone, we are very happy to announce the first part of our "2 million post" giveaway, in which you will be able to win a Pentax K-30 DSLR kit or an Optio WG-2, as well as other great prizes. Our friends at B&H Photo, the largest authorized Pentax retailer in the US, have offered the K-30 as a prize to celebrate this great milestone.   And even if you don't win the grand prize, there are lots of prizes for the runner-ups, so be sure see the full rules for more details!

The K-30 is the latest mid-range DSLR from Pentax, featuring a weather-sealed body, enhanced external controls, and cutting-edge performance.  Read more about the camera in our in-depth Pentax K-30 review! All of the K-30 giveaway details are available below, so look no further than this news post!

Our K-30 giveaway will be a blog post competition that will remain open for 3 months, through the end of the day on Wednesday, November 14, 2012, EST.  During the event period (8/13/2012 - 11/14/2012), you will be able to make two types of submissions to the competition.  You can choose to submit one or both types, though submitting both essentially doubles your chances of winning.  You will be able to make your submissions as private posts on the forum, which will later be published on the home page by our staff.

Submission #1

The first of two blog posts you will be able to submit is a short piece about what piece of photographic equipment has made the biggest positive impact on your photography or workflow.  Each blog post should be about 1 page long (as long as this announcement) in order to be approved for the competition.  The piece of equipment you choose to blog about can be a camera, lens, accessory, bag, computer program, or even something you built yourself!  Your blog post should include the following:

  • An introductory paragraph
  • A photo & description of the item that has been the most influential on your photography
  • A paragraph describing why this item has made such a big impact
  • Sample photos taken with the item you're blogging about, if applicable (otherwise, examples of the item in use)
  • A brief conclusion
  • Clean formatting & grammar

As long as all of these requirements are met, you're free to use your imagination and make your post look as appealing as possible!  Please note: formatting will be limited to what's allowed by forum BBcode (bold, italics, underlines, inline images, links, bullet lists, paragraphs, and tables).  Photos may be uploaded using the forum attachment system (preferred), or linked to from an external host.

Submission #2

The second type of contest submission will be a blog post describing the "making of" one of your favorite photos (example post 1, example post 2).  We encourage you to take a look at the two linked example posts to get an idea of what the layout of your post should be like.  Your post should include the following, and be about as long as example post #1:

  • An introductory paragraph stating why you picked this photo
  • The photo being discussed, embedded
  • The equipment (camera, lens, tripod, flash, post processing software etc.) used
  • Technical information about the photo (shutter speed, aperture, ISO, focal length, white balance, etc.)
  • A paragraph describing, in detail, your post-processing technique (if applicable), or explaining how you managed to accomplish an effect without processing
  • (Optional, but encouraged) The photo before processing, embedded
  • Brief closing remarks
  • Clean formatting & grammar

We recommend that your posts emphasize the technique used to capture and process the image. Please note that all photos must have thumbnails that are no wider than 600 pixels and no taller than 700 pixels.  You may, however, link these thumbnails to full-size images.  As with submission #1, formatting will be limited to what's permitted by the forum post editor. Photos may be uploaded using the forum attachment system (preferred), or linked to from an external host.

Judging

Once the contest closes to submissions, and once all blog posts have been published, your fellow forum members will vote for their favorite blog posts.  Voting will be held exclusively on the PentaxForums.com forum.  The number of votes you received for your first submission will be combined with the number of votes received for your second submission in order to determine your overall score, and the participant with the highest overall score will be the winner.  The nine runners-up will also receive prizes (see full terms for details).

Note that in order to start the voting period as early as possible, your blog posts may be published on our homepage before the contest closes.  Read on for the fine print related to this contest- we've tried to keep it as simple as possible.  We wish you the best of luck in this competition!

I forgot about this too, but the blogs have been great and informative. I wish I would have submitted one. So far I have yet to see one about "Manual mode" being the most influential, and for me, that's what opened the door wide open for me.

RonHendriks1966 [Delete] Dec 13th, 2012 3:53AM

Totaly forgot about this, but reading the nice blogs is great.

jmick [Delete] Nov 17th, 2012 3:39PM

where do we go to view the submissions and vote? anyone know?
Thanks

memo90061 [Delete] Nov 16th, 2012 11:43PM

Where can I see the submissions? I want to read them. :)

jimntonik [Delete] Nov 15th, 2012 8:33PM

Any idea how many submissions will end up being posted? It looked like there were quite a few!

Adam [Delete] Nov 15th, 2012 1:33PM

The voting period will last a while- we've post to publish all the submissions now!

MSL [Delete] Nov 15th, 2012 11:29AM

Can you specify how long the voting period will last?
Is there some reason why you are combining votes from each entry stream, rather than just looking for the best entry in each contest? The rules above say that entering in each doubles your chance of winning, which would imply they were being judged separately.

jojes [Delete] Oct 22nd, 2012 10:56AM

I have used Pentax cameras since the early 70-ies; the mecanical ones of course with changable optics and all the way to my latest K 200. I can even use my old lenses on the K 200 due to a converter between the 42 mm and the modern lens mounts.
So Pentax is for me a good quality camera and will be so for many years!

I agree with TomR'spost. It also leaves me with the question regarding metrics, i.e., are the two posts averagd or do they stand equally on their own merit. I find the proposition interesting, however.

dinneenp [Delete] Oct 22nd, 2012 3:38AM

"Note that in order to start the voting period as early as possible, your blog posts may be published on our homepage before the contest closes."
where can I find submitted entries?

pentaxior [Delete] Oct 21st, 2012 12:50PM

Just read this competition. Wonderfull idea, because it triggers the best of the submitters. Not yet read the conditions. I feel to submit, but I have to search after that one photo that opened my eyes.
Ok, I will try.

TomR [Delete] Sep 5th, 2012 6:24PM

The voting procedure puts early submitters at an unfair advantage. If the total number of votes counts, as the text above suggests, the earlier of two equally good submissions has a higher chance of winning, because it has more time to accumulate votes. A more balanced criterion would be to determine the mean of marks from, say, 1 to 5; alternatively, voting should only begin after the submission period has ended.

nanok [Delete] Aug 26th, 2012 2:41PM

hmm, nice idea. i'm genuinely looking forward to reading these "mini articles". if ever there was a chance to prove that the pentax community is one of photographers, who actually take pictures and can explain what they are doing, this is it! let it rip!

duron [Delete] Aug 20th, 2012 3:16AM

sorry all BUT I am the winner, thanks!
(in my dreams lol)

karlito [Delete] Aug 19th, 2012 2:56PM

i need to win this!!!!

chuckn246 [Delete] Aug 19th, 2012 2:32PM

I'm glad a photography forum is having a writing contest.

liukaitc [Delete] Aug 14th, 2012 12:52PM

maybe like $50, $100, etc b&h gift card for other place winner??

Fl_Gulfer [Delete] Aug 14th, 2012 10:51AM

No fair to us brain damaged people that can't form a sentence or are suffering from onset to alzimers.
It should be just a open contest to Pentax owners. Like buying a ticket to the drawing for a dollar or something like that.

Adam [Delete] Aug 14th, 2012 6:28AM

Any Pentax camera is allowed!

saff [Delete] Aug 14th, 2012 6:16AM

@markku55 - where does it specify that you can't submit a photo taken with a film camera?

markku55 [Delete] Aug 13th, 2012 10:51PM

So conserning the submission #2 you can not attend with a picture taken with film camera - why?

Adam [Delete] Aug 13th, 2012 1:46PM

While there isn't really a word count limit, the change has been made as I think it will keep the blog posts more focused and more fun to write.

rparmar [Delete] Aug 13th, 2012 11:11AM

Good idea! I suggest the making of could/should be about a single photograph. I wouldn't have space to discuss more than one shot in the word count provided!

Doanh [Delete] Aug 13th, 2012 12:11AM

There is a typo in the title. Please fix.
