Pentax K-01 Firmware v1.01 Released

Stability and autofocus improvements · 10-11-2012 · By PF Staff in Firmware Updates

Pentax has just released a firmware update for the Pentax K-01 which includes the following changes:

  • Improved the auto focus performance
  • Improved stability of recording for some SDHC/SDXC memory card
  • Improved stability for general performance

It is very welcome to finally see see a stability update for something other than a high-end body, let alone an update that improves autofocus.

Download the Firmware Here

In order to upgrade your firmware, follow these simple steps:

  1. Download the firmware ZIP file using the link above
  2. Unzip the zip file to a folder of your choosing
  3. Locate the extracted .BIN file and copy it to the root of a formatted SD card
  4. Insert the card into your camera and ensure it is fully charged
  5. Turn the camera on and go to the setup tab in the menu;select the "firmware" option
  6. Select "Yes"at the firmware upgrade prompt
  7. Once the screen displays "Complete", turn off your camera
  8. Power your camera back on and resume normal use
  9. In order to verify that the firmware update was successful, go back to the firmware option in the setup menu. The screen should indicate version 1.x, where x is the latest version number for your camera, as listed above.  You can now resume normal camera use.

The Pentax K-01 is a mirrorless camera from Pentax which supports their full K-mount DSLR lens lineup.  It currently retails for $630; see also our in-depth Pentax K-01 review.

You mean Ricoh shortchanged their customers initially and only added designed-in features later through updates? You hope Pentax does that?

Hopefully Pentax goes in the direction of Ricoh with firmware updates so we can still get updates years down the line with additional features

did this update really improve RAW fps as someone mentioned?

Got a new K0q this week as the look kept growing on me, the actual user reviews seem to be positive and the price became irresistible. And wow, what a joy to use, focus peaking superb, build and image quality outstanding and what's all the negatives about form over function. Apart from a good evf I can't think what else I'd like to change. Full marks Pentax for being so brave. Perhaps the slow burn K01 will surprise everyone after all?

How long before we get a K-5 update?

i83N [Delete] Oct 11th, 2012 12:29PM

Follow-up note. The instructions above don't work for the K-01.

DON'T hold down the MENU button when you turn the camera on.
Instead, insert the SD card with the .BIN file and navigate to
a new menu feature called "Firmware Info/Options" and navigate
to a new "Update Screen." Full details below:

Updating Procedure

1. Provide a formated SD memory card for the update software.
The downloaded file is self-extracting.
The following files are extracted.

readme.txt : this document
fwdc214b.bin : Firmware

Copy the above Firmware file [fwdc214b.bin] to the root directory in
the SD card.
If your computer does not have a card slot, you can copy the firmware
update file by inserting the SD card into your camera and then
connecting the camera directly to your computer.

2. Insert the D-LI90P battery into the camera and confirm the battery is full
by battery level indicator then turn the camera off.

3. Insert the update SD card (prepared in step 1) into the camera
and close card cover.

4. Turn the camera power on.

5. Press MENU button to display MENU screen.

6. Press the four-way controller right to display [Set-up 3] menu screen.

7. Select [Firmware Version Info] in the [Set-up 3] menu then press the
four-way controller right.
The firmware version is displayed on the [Firmware Version Info] screen.

8. Press the four-way controller right to display update screen.
Press the four-way controller up to select [Start] and press OK button.
*If firmware file is not saved to SD card correctly, this screen
will not be displayed.

9. Card access lamp will be blinked and display will be changed from
[NOW LODING] to [COMPLETE].
*Do not turn OFF the camera while updating.

10. Automatically turn OFF the camera. (Approx. 5 second)

11. Remove the SD card from camera.

Thanks for the heads-up!
I wonder if a firmware upgrade could improve the K-5's video performance?
