Pentax Announces 8 New Products and Lens Coating

Pentax K-5 Successor, Q10, DA 18-270mm, DA 560mm, and more! · 09-10-2012 · By PF Staff in Pentax News
Pentax Announces 8 New Products and Lens Coating

Today, Pentax officially announces a host of new products, proving most of the recently-posted leaks and rumors true!  The products being announced today include:

In addition, Pentax is introducing a new lens coating called HD Coating (HD) which will be replacing their Super Multi Coating (SMC). This coating reduces reflections by more than 50% over the entire visible spectrum compared to conventional multi-layer coating, and is claimed to improve color reproduction and greatly reduce flare.  Lenses with this coating will be prefixed with "HD" rather than "SMC".

Click on the links above to proceed to our equipment databases to read the full specifications for these new products, or read on for an overview of what's new!

HD Lens Coating

To quote the Pentax press release:

"Compared with conventional multi-layer coatings, the new multi-layer HD Coating, exclusively developed by PENTAX, offers much improved light transmittance and a much lower refractive index. Because it minimizes reflections, it delivers sharp, clear images free of flare and ghost images, even under demanding lighting conditions such as backlight. This coating assures optical performance almost equal to Aero Bright Coating, another PENTAX-exclusive lens coating process made possible by advanced nanotechnology and applied to higher-class lenses."

This implies that the coating will be reseved for higher-end lenses, as Pentax how has 3 coatings to choose from (Aero Bright, found on the DA 25mm F4 645 lens, HD, and SMC).

Pentax HD Coating

The graph shown above, which was published by Pentax, shows how their new HD coating performs compared to the old (conventional) multi-coating.

Pentax K-5 II and K-5 IIs

We are very happy to see that Pentax is keeping the K-5, which has received a great deal of praise over the past 2 years, available to Pentax users through an updated body!  On the other hand, while we don't want to speak to soon, the Pentax K-5 II doesn't seem to differ much from its 2-year-old predecessor, and it likely won't launch at the same price tag of $879 as the current K-5.

Pentax K-5 IIs

What's new in the Pentax K-5 II?
  • An all-new SAFOX X autofocus system with a best-in-class (according to Pentax) operating EV range of -3 to 18 EV.  It still has 11 points, 9 cross-type, though they can work with luminous flux of F2.8 as well as F5.6.  The AF algorithms have been improved, and features such as select-area expansion have been added.
  • A new anti-glare film in front of the 3" LCD (with the same resolution), with a tempered glass front panel and new mount
  • New firmware features, still running on the old PRIME II image processor
  • H.264 video format (unconfirmed)

Pentax K-5 II BackShown above: the K-5 II's new LCD design

The Pentax K-5 IIs

The K-5 IIs is just like the K-5 II, but it does not have the anti-aliasing filter that's normally in front of the sensor.  This allows for a higher effective image resultion at the cost of risking seeing more distortion.

The estimated availability date of the K-5 II is late October, 2012.  Pentax is calling this camera their "new flagship model".

Pentax-DA 560mm Lens

The new HD Pentax-DA 560mm F5.6 ED AW DC is an extreme-telephoto lens designed for Pentax APS-C cameras. It's the first Pentax lens to feature the new HD coating, and it also has high-speed autofocus powered by a DC motor.  It supports 40.5mm drop-in filters in the rear.

Contrary to recent rumors, this lens does not collapse or telescope.

The 560mm is fully weather sealed, so it will be a great choice for outdoor photography.

Pentax 560mm F5.6

Pentax-DA 18-270mm Lens

The new SMC Pentax-DA 18-270mm F3.5-6.3 ED SDM is a superzoom lens featuring a massive 15x zoom range and Pentax's silent SDM autofocus.  It has a minimum focusing distance of just 0.49m accross the entire zoom range, making it good for close-ups and adding quite a bit of overall versatility.

This lens is a clone of the Tamron 18-270mm lens, which is something Pentax has done before with their now-discontinued 18-250mm.  Shown below is a comparison of the Pentax and the Tamron version of this lens:

Pentax 18-270mm vs Tamron 18-270mm

Pentax-D FA 645 90mm F2.8 Macro

The HD Pentax-D FA 645 90mm F2.8 ED AW SR Macro is a $5000 medium-format macro lens designed for the Pentax 645D.  It's the first 645-system lens to feature Pentax's new HD coating, and it's also the first Pentax lens to feature in-lens stabilization (note that the 645D lacks the sensor-shift shake reduction found in Pentax K-mount DSLRs).

Like other D-FA series 645 lenses, this 90mm macro is fully weather sealed.  We expect this lens to deliver exceptional resolution for close-up and macro purposes!

Pentax Q10

The Pentax Q10 is said to deliver better basic performance and autofocus than its predecessor

Pentax Q10 System

Here's what's new in the Pentax Q10:

  • Improved contrast-detect AF performance
  • New body design
  • Now also available in red in addition to black and silver
  • New 06 zoom lens available

Pentax Q10 Back

Pentax Q 15-45mm Lens

Today's final lens announcement is that of the SMC Pentax-Q 15-45mm F2.8 Telephoto Zoom 06, which is approximately equivalent to a 83-250mm zoom on digital.  What's impressive about this lens is the constant F2.8 aperture!

Pentax Q-K Adapter

The adapter allowing Pentax K-mount lenses to be used on the Pentax Q system is now official.  See below for photos of the adapter in use:

This combination with the DA 50mm still looks the part!

A product announcement of this size deserves an equally-sized commentary, which you can expect to see on our homepage by tomorrow morning.  We will also be reporting live and first-hand about all of these products at Photokina next week!

Now that shake reduction (SR) is incorporated in the D FA 645 90mm F2.8 Macro, perhaps we can look forward 8x42 or 10x42 binoculars. So far only the Canon 10x42 L IS WP appears to be the only image-stabilized, weatherproof, high-image-quality binocular suitable for birding.

Bryan [Delete] Sep 13th, 2012 10:09PM

D600 is out.
Hope its only me hesitating to get it.

Tord [Delete] Sep 13th, 2012 3:17PM

The new Q10 was a surprise, while the K-5 II, and its brother, is at the most worth a jawn! The new super tele looks great, I have to admit.
Using a normal Pentax/K-Mount VC/VR/OIS lens on the Q10 will not work as there is no power in the adapter - they could learn a lot from Nikon!

shakumar [Delete] Sep 12th, 2012 3:19AM

Sony has the new a99 full-frame flagship.
Pentax, it's *really* your turn.

NotSteve [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 8:01PM

Mr_Canuck, it's not an issue of capping the budget. It's known that this was the case under Hoya, but under Ricoh, a relatively large company, Pentax has hired/rehired various engineers to expand the work on cameras, i.e., they didn't buy Pentax to shut it down. While these aren't the cameras people were expecting or hoping for, they are placeholders while other developments proceed and can be put into the next generation of cameras. People expect consumer electronics to get updated every couple of years, so this is what we're seeing.

Mr_Canuck [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 11:16AM

Ricoh have clearly capped the budgets for the Pentax crew. Maybe not their fault? Wonder where they feel their money is to be made? Probably office machines.

Regarding the K2 Mark II with it's revolutionary, mind-blowing one improvement, I would have hoped the process/buffer speed might've doubled at the least. Really now, processors have sped up measurably since 2010 so c'mon. Otherwise, what's to improve? They'd have to get into the whole hybrid finder or a brand new technology and I don't see them going there. The K5 is still the bomb. But the K30 is a bit weird next to it, pretty similar.

I'm not sure about the full-frame thing. They seem to have found their niche with the 645, no? There's a strong argument for that. Thus the 90 lens.

They've filled a void at the telephoto end with the 560. The Tamron rebadge is a disappointment. Should have been DC motor and WR at least.

Really, they just need to come out with Mark II of their SDM lenses with DC or an SDM that continues to work, as well as the HD coating (a flare resistant 16-50 perhaps? and why not some seals on the 17-70?) and fix their reliability issues, then I'd consider buying one of their zooms. They really should be the WR company all across. C'mon again.

All in all, better than a "we've decided to discontinue our dslr program".

KHatfull [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 9:35AM

@flomat - Yep, just like on the Tammy 70-200 and 90 macro.

@Fl_Gulfer - My vote for the best response in the thread. Huzzah!

@calsan - 100% correct...

alexcox [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 9:24AM

If Pentax have just issued a 560mm APS-C prime, they are not going to be making a full-frame body.

chiane [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 9:02AM

Does $250 for a manual focus adapter seem like a lot or am I just not thinking it through?

cbope [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 8:24AM

All I can say is this leaves the door open for something bigger, either a surprise photokina announcement or something next year. There is definitely still an opening in the top spot of the Pentax DSLR offering as well as room at the bottom for an entry level model. I'll be very interested to see how the K-5IIs pans out regarding image quality and AF improvements compared to my K-5. I still love my K-5 but I could definitely go for improved AF accuracy, not necessarily speed. The biggest disappointment to me is lack of a new replacement for the DA* 16-50 f2.8 lens. I really want one, but I am just not willing to take the risk on getting a bad sample or one which develops SDM motor failure down the line. The current lens is simply too expensive here in Europe to take the risk and since there is no Pentax service center near me... just no. Anyway, looking forward to more news from photokina and less whining here.

LaurenOE [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 7:55AM

I'm going with the "Shoe-drop-metaphor" over the coming weeks leading up to Photokina. As a crazy die-hard-Pentaxian, a new top-of-the-line DSLR - either FF or APS-C needs to be announced. I love my K5s and K30, but this news is hardly moving the ball down field.

GibbyTheMole [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 7:43AM

Yeah, it's true there's nothing groundbreaking about the new lineup... But at least Ricoh is continuing Pentax DSLRs and the Q. And it is nice that they're coming out with the 18-270 as a replacement for the discontinued 18-250. And hey... maybe with the new Q10, some will dump their old Q's on the used market & I'll be able to maybe afford one! ;-)

Fl_Gulfer [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 7:23AM

They only have till Dec. 21 st too announce a NEW camera or all is moot.

geojazz [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 6:53AM

As a 30 year Pentax Veteran and a Professional Photographer, I was truly hoping for a sneak preview or a Stay tuned for March 2013 FF Camera offering. I guess I will have to rip into the Pentax People at PDN in NYC on October 27th.

SkilakDeZoo [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 6:22AM

Apropos, the professionals are only paid amatures, so getting FF into hands does not mean to me that I am a professional.

SkilakDeZoo [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 6:19AM

If I were Pentax, I would do the same. No point going for FF. I know that many would like a FF but only a few needs it. I am glad that K-7 and K-5s are of the same body becasue this body is perfect; it is not like a brick e.g. D800 :) I love K-5 exactly for its size and handling and do not care for many AF points, I use only one:)

jb09ss [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 5:56AM

A dslr line-up with the K-5 II and the K-30 leaves a nice place for a top of the line dslr. It also enable pentax to use current production capacity to supply 2 fine products while being able to use all of it's engineering staff to develop new products. 8 new products is a huge announcement for a company the size of pentax, I don't understand all the complaining going on here!

prima [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 4:56AM

Now...design of Pentax DSLR especially for APS-C not a Full Frame.
I think with K-5 II or IIs,Pentax can compete EOS 5D mk III or D800 in term of image quality..."Full Frame is not important"

sbroadbentphoto [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 3:36AM

It baffles me why people are so whiney. I love my K5. People have raved on and on about the ergonomics and image quality. Maybe the newer, higher res sensors are worse in lower light and pentax has still not mastered the 16mp one currently available. Look at Canon and Nikon. They have released tiny updates a lot of the time. Pentax are fixing the things that people are complaining about and they still aren't happy.
Who here is using the current K5 or K30 to its full potential? Everyone i know that has one can't foresee when they will need to upgrade because their needs are met.
Face it, Pentax cameras are in general much more capable than most pentax, canon, nikon, sony photographers. quit whinging and take some photos, learn from them and take better photos!

sgiolda [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 2:52AM

Where is the FF DSLR??? It seems that Pentax will stay far behind in the pro level. Big disappointment! Why someone could spend a bunch of money to buy again a K5??? And how can Pentax can stand against D800 and 5D III??? I think it's time to go on with some other format.

flomat [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 2:48AM

The 18-270 is really a bad joke, the rebadgment didn't even care for removing the AF/MF switch. Despite its higher price than the original it obviously lacks WR, DC and Quick shift. Does this mean for MF you have to disengade AF on DSLR and lens?

bossa [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 2:38AM

@ jrpower10: ROFLMAO! Lot's of people are saying how great the 560 will be and lots also saying they can't afford a FF. Seems odd that Pentax can ask $7k for a Telephoto (BTW is it FF compatible?)and $5k for a MF macro lens but just do a make-over on the cameras. Strange. They must know their demographic though.. right?

calsan [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 2:28AM

Nothing in this announcement that would prevent anyone from taking good photos...

jrpower10 [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 1:22AM

I'm with loveisageless. The only disappointment for me is the 18-270 isn't weather-sealed, so I'll be keeping my DA 18-250 for travel (not the end of the world).

Now for the glass-is-half-full news, I think I'll get the Q10 and adapter. Suddenly my Da*50-135 becomes equivalent to roughly 250-650 f2.8! Now I can quit worrying about when the Sigma 120-300 f2.8 is coming in k-mount. Tthhhhhhh, stick it Sigma (lol).

dominikkolendo [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 12:56AM

i dont mean to sound like i haev no clue what i am talking about, but why couldnt a k5-2 have a pass option for the aa filter? i mean ho wis it that hard to build teh hardware so a switch can choose to use the aa filte or not?

loveisageless [Delete] Sep 11th, 2012 12:21AM

I've noticed that a lot of the K-5's for sale in the market place have fewer than 2,000 actuations. Reminds me of all the Nikon D700s that went up for sale as soon as the D800 was released. Dozens of ads on Craig's List for "lightly used D700 with less than xxx actuations. Really...folks who have hardly used the camera they had feel the absolute need to buy the next new thing. I think the k-5 is a keeper. The limited primes definitely so. Need to zero in on the flying bird, baseball, football, race car, cyclist, etc.? Nikon will have a nice D600 to sell you very soon. Pentax could release a treasure trove of new f/2.8 lenses and the moaning would begin about how much they are charging for them. Folks, Pentaxians are cheap SOBs. Ask anyone who trys to resell a lens or camera body in the market place. Tons of low-ball offers and few real buyers. Pentax could release a FF tomorrow and everyone would be moaning at the price point. I think folks need to take a deep breath, exhale, and go out an take some pictures with the cameras and lenses they already have. End of rant.

DSims [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 11:58PM

If it seems like these announcements are anti-climactic it's because they are. There's more coming. It may not be announced in the next 2 weeks, but if you think about it, other announcements would be even bigger. A new top end 645D and a new K-mount DSLR would sound even bigger. And both must be coming, although it's unclear whether there will be a FF this year or next. But an entry level model must appear somehow, so they're either going to release one or produce a model above the K-5 II and push the K-30 down. In fact, if an entry model isn't produced, it may be a positive sign that a FF isn't so far off, allowing the K-30 to come down in price at just the right time.

It's not that I'm disinterested in the products in the announcements - I actually want to buy some of them. But I don't think all the "great things" have come yet.

richard balonglong [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 11:44PM

If the HD coating is the 9th news, not product, well, too bad...

Ole [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 11:18PM

8 og 9 products? The rumor was 9 pieces of news, not 9 products. The 9th is the press release on HD coating.

ogl [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 11:15PM

Is there something absolutely shocking new? :)

Malsi [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 11:11PM

Bad news: "It still has 11 points, 9 cross-type..." :(.

richard balonglong [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 10:59PM

8 products today. Rumors told it is 9 products all in all. If true if it's 9 producs all in all, what would be the 9th product???

LeGuillotine [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 10:46PM

WOW! Pentax Q(10) + Q-K adapter + DA 560 = ~3000mm 5.6!!

wed7 [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 10:46PM

Did Pentax really invest their proceeds from K-5 for these??? -Come on!

donras [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 10:23PM

New SAFOX X is welcome. Hopefully this will start bringing Pentax up to the majors' autofocus capabilities --- time will tell. However, motor speed and reliability is still a concern....

donras [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 10:16PM

Upgrade to coatings is always great, but notice that the HD coating is compared with "Conventional" MC, presumably not SMC. Wish they were more forthright about it rather than succumbing to marketing spin. Also, difficult to discern the real-world effect when we are talking differences of fractional percents.

goldenarrow [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 10:13PM

Generally positive (if unspectacular) news. Momentum is building for other new products next year. Seems like incremental improvements are what we will see from Pentax in the future. I can't handle the price of the 560mm but everything else is affordable and useful and still fits within the long legacy of gear. I wish there were other things, like a prosumer teleconverter, 28mm lens, a longer macro lens, a better made low-end flash. The better AF is very welcomed. I think Pentax will always be behind the others but still come out with a decent range of gear (I can't afford it all anyways). They really need to get rid of that Max-Price policy. I might actually upgrade from the K200 to a K-5 IIs (now where DID I put that ounce of gold?????).

Ikarus [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 10:12PM

HD - could you possibly come up with an acronym that's more generic and ubiquitous? With a derivative branding like that, how could you not be considered as a 'me too' company? What was wrong with SMC? I won't even ask about 'Takumar'. They squandered that one ages ago.

redpigeons [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 9:55PM

but still K-5 II s with the couple of the DA LTD still be one of the greatest kits ever
and I will probably upgrade BC no AA filter is a big deal

sckortyman [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 9:44PM

I really think that they needed to add focus peaking and much better video. I mean, if the K-30 has better video than the k-5 II something is wrong. Esp when they use about the same sensor.

redpigeons [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 9:42PM

if you are following Steve huff photo, he is telling that Sony came to his house and showed him their new products , he promised that one in particular is going to make the rest of the industry drool ,
the Q10 is sexy but very expensive with small sensor and no pro wide lens , the K-5 is already fantastic dslr the new one will also be a great DSLR I am sure ,
but we need to learn to accept Pentax is a small brand and it is not the star of the show , we stick with it BC we are used to it and we have the lenses .
but really it is time for a FF. come on Pentax

P.S new auto focus system is first step BC Pentax was behind and good auto focus is basic before everything else

reivax [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 9:35PM

People have a right to expect great things from Pentax. Why wouldn't you? Every other company seems to be releasing (or has recently released) some pretty exciting stuff. It seems like Pentax just gave up and said, "Hey remember that camera you really liked that we released two years ago? Yeah, we're releasing that again." I wasn't hoping for FF with the K5 replacement, but I certainly wasn't the K5 replacement to be a K5 with some nail polish on it.

mickey [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 9:19PM

Overall, I'm not too disappointed. I am in no position to upgrade to a new camera for at least 2-3 years, by which time I'm sure there wil be a few more DSLR 's on the market from Pentax.
The rumours came from posters wish lists more than any actual idea what Pentax is doing.
If you're disappointed, you only have yourself to blame for believing such rumours.

kinkindoll [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 9:17PM

really really disappointed for this announcement, what are they doing, K5 and K5 II ??? Who will buy these ? I really disappointed and will jump ship to fujifilm. Why no FULL FRAME, the trend of this market is FULL FRAME, WHAT ARE YOU DOING PENTAX RICOH ?????

zosxavius [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 8:50PM

Yeah, isn't it clear to all you people that this rehash of the k-5 is clearly intended to divert resources to something even better? I'm acually glad they didn't go with the 24mp sensor as I still find the k-5 to be superior. I would much rather have iq approaching full frame than more megapixels. That said I hope they include some of the tweaks they did to the k30s engine. The raws off of the k30 look like they are retaining more detail in comparisons I've seen. Especially at 3200. However they are cooking the raws seems to be improved. Hope that carries over. Yeah, you all do sound like a bunch of whiners. We have some of the best aps-c cameras in the world with a full frame seeming almost inevitable and lots of rumors of prototypes in the wild now and everyone is horribly disappointed. Hell its not even photokina yet! They may have a trick or two up their sleeves yet. Give pentax some time. What they offer now blows away the competition for the price on bodies and their glass is stellar generally. They also do medium format, which is better than full frame anyways. The new q looks really good and makes me want one. All in all its not been a bad year for pentax. I think exciting things are ahead.

Bryan [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 8:26PM

I wonder the same, if Nikon will release the D600 at the price they announced. I hope the 9th anouncement wouldn't be 645D II, which i could possiblely careless about it.
I agree K-5 II will make a successful DSLR only if they target the price at the same price as current K-5. otherwise, I don't see necessarity to get a firmware upgraded k-5.

Nacho_tyr [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 8:23PM

i hope the safox X has a the best auto focus system in this range price. i wanted better video opcion, focus peaking (video included) and maybe tilt lcd

KHatfull [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 8:22PM

I for one am glad to see Pentax NOT get into the absolutely tragic MP race. 16MP on APS-C is JUST fine. If you need more go FF and be done with it.

I just came from Olympus within the last couple months...you folks want to be disappointed? Try being a loyal Olympus user. Talk about a great system unrealized!! The poor Olympus folks still have the half-assed promise of a new E-5 replacement. You get two new bodies, several lenses and a 560mm to freakin' die for and B B B B B.

Add to that you have the best support for legacy lenses bar none. Wow...all this complaining truly does floor me.

I just picked up a K-5. I'll consider the K-5IIs when I see reviews...without regret.

dmytty [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 8:18PM

That 'HD' coating thing...

Someone ought to break it to the CEO's drunk son-in-law that runs marketing that 'HD' is commonly associated with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It's not exactly a designation that speaks well to the resolving power of the upcoming HD lenses. (Maybe that's why they're afraid to bump up from 16 MP?)

Seriously, I had no idea that Hoya gutted the company so badly. Unfortunately Ricoh doesn't seem to have any idea of how to run a camera company either.

Add that HD to their other announcement and you get the 'HD 560mm @ f/5.6' for $7k. The folks at Nikon and Canon are clutching each other and wiping the tears of laughter from their eyes. As we should be as well...I mean it's not every day that a nearly billion dollar company screws up things so thoroughly. As an entrepreneur I'm going to add this to my litany of 'things so stupid only a billion dollar company could live through it and still keep the lights on for a week'.

I pity the few competent professionals left at Pentax (there can't be many).

bossa [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 8:10PM

PS: So it looks as though there's no 645D replacement coming either unless there are things still yet to be announced.

I am curious as to how Pentax can release a 560mm f5.6 telephoto for 7 grand and a 645 90mm Macro lens for 5 grand and yet budget on the camera upgrades.. defies my logic at least.

bossa [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 8:07PM

@LFLee: I believe that the HD coating is the 9th product announced.

mrjamesabels [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 8:01PM

I wonder if Nikon will release the D600 at the price they say they will?

mrjamesabels [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 7:59PM

Sad in some ways and in other ways. The Q looks nice. The super zoom shouldve been wr to justify the price. What else can they do??? I like the no aa filter but using old engine and not much else. Its like rebuying the same camera. WTF!

ikon.st [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 7:55PM

I hope Pentax looks at these comments....looks like majority here are disappointed. Who are they trying to satisfy or impress? Wow!!

LFLee [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 7:55PM

One question.... what is the rumored 9th announcement?

MSM [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 7:53PM

Just an observation for those that have asserted that the DC motor was for the entry consumer grade lenses and the SDM was reserved for the more high-end lenses. Pentax now releases a $7000 lens with a DC motor and a rebadged consumer zoom with an SDM.

Also I agree the earlier poster, it is kind of sad to see the distinction of SMC go away only to be replaced by the ubiquitous 'HD' moniker. Furthermore, to describe any new release as 'almost' as good as an existing product is IMO a marketing failure. Just say the new coating is superior to the industry leading SMC Pentax coatings (or something similar).

Bryan [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 7:44PM

18-270 is even more expensive than Tammy version, and has VC removed.
really speechless...

ShinX414 [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 7:28PM

damn..i'm so disappointed...didn't they say to keep older FA lenses just some time ago???
getting people excited for nothing, seriously...it seems like they were just trying to find things to fill up the data sheet

bossa [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 6:48PM

Obviously Pentax are cost cutting by reusing the K-5 production lines and parts but I am truly at a loss to explain the lack of the new Prime M processor and focus peaking. I would probably prefer a K-30 for my faster lenses due to FP and LV. The previous "please don't make us actually have to make one of these 560mm" was hilarious and kinda makes sense. So Product #9 is indeed the HD coating. Oh well.. After all the threads and predictathons on these forums for the past 6 months this news is indeed like a wet fart.

Spodeworld [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 6:37PM

I would have thought that the K5II would have had focus peaking and the new processor. A bit of a let down.

kacansas03 [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 6:32PM

Seems like Pentax is finally going after the more professional sports photographer. I would be will to bet they would "sell" a pro a K5 IIs plus the 560 lens for a lot less then they would to the average Joe! Really makes me wonder what is next??? If they are actually going to erode the lead of Canon-Nikon they will have to build up more rather than jump in with FF and new lenses. One must keep these announcements in context with the 645 developments.

Tonto [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 6:31PM

Oh and now taking the Q rather than forking out 7k for that 560 on future Africa trip, abit dissapointing really.

Vasyl [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 6:30PM

Time to buy K5...disappointment...
DC coating? Looks like a marketing trick...look at the red side close to 700 nm, it is the same as SMC... may be mistaken, but red still does not come through well...

Tonto [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 6:30PM

Still one 'Announcement' to go and could still be some mockup stuff like earlier in the year- My question is...where are the other lenses from the roadmap?????

cdnkit [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 6:29PM

Ok, I was waiting to see what the updated K-5 has to offer before upgrading my K-200D and I think I will keep my first choice : the K-30...the focus peaking is very attractive and it would have been nice to add this feature to the K-5II

Verglace [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 6:06PM

HD coating seems promising, would have liked to have a better name for it though... HD just seems so cheesy like they are cashing in on the 'HD' hype. I much prefer the old Q design better. I might pick one up if the price comes down to $200. The K-5II is... I'll not go there.

dmytty [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 6:00PM

Wow. Pentax would have been better off retaining their credibility rather than releasing this. Who's going to buy this stuff when Nikon hits with their FF updates?

The 560 lens price tag is the most unbelievable. F/5.6 @ 560mm for $7k is an absolute ripoff compared to a Nikon 400mm f/2.8 @ $9k. I predict Pentax sells 0 of those lenses (yep...I mean ZERO). It's probably vaporware, or at least it has a price tag that says 'please don't make us actually produce this product'.

And the K5 II and IIs @ $1300!?! A better autofocus does not a new flagship product make. 24 megapixels would have been absolutely necessary. Maybe they're just trying to make the K30 look like a great deal (which it still is).

And rebadging a Tamron lens? I'm not going to go there.

Ricoh...you have a few product managers to fire. Time to clean house.

As for me, I'm putting all my Pentax lens purchasing plans on hold. As it is now, I have about $3000 invested in this platform - a small amount as camera gear goes. Don't get me wrong, that money is very well spent and I won't be selling the equipment (good stuff for my son to learn with), but unless Pentax really rocks it over the next year with new products I'm buying a Nikon D800 body and focusing on premium lenses from them.

creampuff [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:59PM

Interesting new stuff, especially the K5 IIs but as most will be out of reach for most Pentax users, it remains to be seen if these can generate much traction in terms of sales. Pentax Q-K Adapter is definitely a must have.

EricBrown [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:53PM

I will be be getting the Q/K adapter! Maybe they will announce the K-3 the first day of the event so not to get lost with all the other announcements. :)

LFLee [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:50PM

Forgot to highlight the new lcd is airless (air tight). Pretty rookie writing for a forum dedicated to Pentax gears (as someone point out the "1500mm reach").... come on.

markac [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:40PM

I think by just updating the K-5 to the K-5 II, it leaves Pentax with the resources to add a FF DSLR.

Wired [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:39PM

can't wait for the new Q/K mount, the new red Q is sexy as well...but don't think I'll get the Q10. All 2(3) new cameras aren't making me jump for joy, but I could see why people would. I would have prefered the same screen as the K30 in the K5ii, the current screen is just not as sharp or contrasty. Would have liked upgraded prime engine as well... but alas, nothing there. I hope they won't be $2000 cameras...$1300 is the max I would pay compared to the outgoing models.

bossa [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:35PM

price of the 560mm is A$6999 (way over the top) I'd rather by a Celestron telescope.

igor [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:32PM

the only interesting news is the 560/5.6, but let's wait for sample shots/reviews AND price tag for final conclusions....

igor [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:29PM

"The K(5)ing is dead... long live the K(5-II)ing".... updating AF and firmware (!!!!) is definitely a big deal to call an old camera "THE NEW FLAGSHIP". Disappointed.

PALADIN85020 [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:28PM

I don't see anything in the K-5 II to make me want to ditch my current K-5 and buy this newer one. It's rather like increasing the tire size 1/2 inch on an automobile so it can go 5 mph faster. Not really significant for everyday driving, and not wonderful enough for me to give up a really nice camera that's 98% of the II model. I expected better, but at the same time, I'm still pleased with my K-5. It'll do just fine for now, thank you. I'd like to know if the new firmware can be retrofitted to the K-5? That would be very nice, Pentax. Please tell us!

jimr-pdx [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:21PM

Glad I wasn't holding my breath for the DA superzoom: 18-270 is a nice idea, but I'd have found far more value in WR and/or XS designs. Imagine an 18-180XS for your next extended hike.. ah well, maybe next time around.

i83N [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:20PM

Know what, I'm glad that PEF raw files stayed at K-5II/IIs

JohnLegrand [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:15PM

Nex - 6 is 10 times more intresting

GXRUser [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 5:00PM

So far, none of my wanted improvements to the Q has been implemented.

No EVF.

No mention of any improvements to legibility to the LCD screen in bright light outside.

No mention of focus peaking to assist with manual focus.

No mention if shake reduction will be active with the K mount adapter.

There have been no Ricoh branded camera announcements.

I still hope for a Q mount and a K AF mount module for the GXR.

AussieTrev [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:58PM

I want that 560, do I need to sell my soul to be able to afford it? And can I justify a K5 IIs when I own a K5? decisions, decisions!

bossa [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:55PM

Hmm.. I hope the lens coating isn't Product #9.

jackassp [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:55PM

Huge disappointment here.

maxfield_photo [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:54PM

Screw it, I'm going back to film.

Jack [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:52PM

I think they'll still announce a new camera. The K-5's with the prime II engine while the 30 has prime M with focus peaking?
Both K-5 and 30 with 16.3 megapixels. I think a new camera with a larger sensor with Prime M, the better AF plus extras. Maybe built in GPS, blue tooth? Or maybe we should just start a new rumor thread.

meeverett [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:50PM

Honestly, camera-wise the K-5 updates are pretty sad. I think this is probably bad news for me on the SLR front. I'm not sure those K-5s are going to prompt very many to get rid of their current K-5. So I'm probably sticking with the K-20 for now. However, and maybe this says as much about the announcement as anything, I'm excited by the Q stuff and I'm probably going to pick up a new/old Q. I think they're planning to keep the Q system around since almost 1/3rd of Pentax's announcements relate directly to the system.

bossa [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:47PM

Wasn't there meant to be nine new products? Perhaps a K-3 at PK? Otherwise, I am slightly underwhelmed.

RaZZ3R [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:46PM

Well that was unespected ?!? I think I might give a trie for K-5 IIs, if only the Pentax "cough Tamron cough" 18-270mm would have been weather sealed that might just made my day but f***. I hope the new Q will fair better in terms of upgrade then K-5

wed7 [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:38PM

Another SDM lens?

laolao [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:33PM

disappointed....... all i can say

CaveDoctor [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:31PM

I wonder whether the new firmware features on the K-5 II will be available as updates on the original K-5.

solar1 [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:30PM

No mention of focus peaking, if this is true that would be too bad as it's in both the K30 and K-01

glanglois [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:28PM

I wonder if Adam missed something. The HD coating is described as being "almost equal to Aero Bright". In that case, HD is for the middle class (so to speak) lenses whilst AB is reserved for the "higher-class" glass. Higher than what I'm not sure. I don't see any implication that SMC is going away.

Nor do I see a curve for the increase in light transmittance but it's early days yet.

As I'm out of the Q mainstream, at least for now, I have to admit being very disappointed that we have a Q adapter before we have a TC. I expect that the intention was to stimulate Q sales. Instead of stimulating K mount glass sales? Sounds odd from here.

I'm sure we'll hear background from Adam, Falk, et al.

twitch [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:27PM

"This allows for a higher effective image resultion at the cost of risking seeing more distortion."

Distortion isn't the problem, the problem is the risk of getting moire patterns in certain situations.

Matthew [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:27PM

Glad they have addressed the screen cover issues on the k5. That has been my only technical issue on what has otherwise been a very reliable camera. Auto focus improvements are always welcome. However, given that these are not enormous improvements (no new sensor, shutter, viewfinder), I hope we do not have to pay too much above what the k5 has been retailing for.

netrex [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:27PM

K-5 upgrade with no AA-filter. Good stuff, do want!

Also, it's not effectively any focal length, it's still 300mm. You know this, why write it like that when it's wrong.

RonHendriks1966 [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:26PM

O bummer! That is little improvement over K-5, but I still will order at least one new K-5 II. I hope there will come a K-5 II Silver Limited Edition!

pentaxpancake [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:21PM

yawn

Nivz [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:21PM

Hopefully they still have a 9th announcement to do at photokina! but calling th K5-iis their new flagship, does make it seem like there wont be other announcements..

imtheguy [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:20PM

I love new gear as much (or more) than the next guy/gal and if a "new coating" is the big news this year, woe is me. Yes, great 560mm but it it was news 6 months ago. A Q in red...OMG, better sell my white one and upgrade. Sorry, I am not a FF freak but still expected something new, not just marketing hype over retreads and old announcements. Feel free to bash me for feeling down when people are starving.

Ok, ok, I love the DC motor and weather sealing announced on the 560mm. Smiling again.

synonyms [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 4:09PM

I have been on the photo scene for a bit of time etc, but i had honestly hoped for a full frame.. i understand that a lot of people either find it unrealistc or sees it as a pipedream... or whatever.. but god i had really hoped for it.. i really had.
I dont wanna chance my system but i really want to go full frame as the next step. il keep dreaming abit for 7 days more, and just HOPE that they have a surprise up there sleeves.

but still, some of the stuff looks good :)

Sagitta [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 2:28PM

Wow... it seems strange seeing SMC going away. Talk about an impressive run. Can't wait to see how the prices flush out once everything hits market!

blackcloudbrew [Delete] Sep 10th, 2012 2:26PM

Well, heck I'll say it, wahoo Pentax, way to go with new stuff to desire.
