Pentax K to Q Adapter Now Shipping

Mount DSLR lenses on your Q · 12-18-2012 · By PF Staff in Pentax News

The official Pentax K to Q mount adapter has finally hit the shelves and is now readily available for order from B&H.  A couple of these adapters did arrive last week, but they sold out within minutes!  This adapter allows you to mount Pentax SLR lenses on the Pentax Q, and moreover, it allows you to manually control the aperture so that digital lenses (without an aperture ring) can be used.

The adapter also has a built-in mechanical leaf shutter which goes up to 1/1000s. Using this shutter rather than the camera's electronic shutter reduces motion blur.

Pentax Q to K Adapter

When you mount a DSLR lens on the Q, the corresponding crop factor is 5.5x, meaning that a 300mm lens would correspond to a 1650mm on a full-frame K-mount camera!  This gives you an easy, effective, an affordable way to get extreme telephoto (and extreme macro) images!

The only downside is that the official adapter costs $249, but it's worth every penny if you want to get the most out of your Q (which is now available for less than the adapter itself)!  No other adapter will give you the leaf shutter - not even Novoflex's overpriced $300 adapter!

With that said, if you're on a budget, you can still mount K-mount lenses on your Q.  All it takes is $19.95 to get the Fotodiox Pentax K to Q adapter pictured below.

Generic AdapterThe most basic Fotodiox adapter doesn't have the fancy features of the Pentax adapter, so the lenses you adapt had better have an aperture ring!

Have you already received your copy of the Pentax adapter?  If so, don't forget to post a review of it in our lens database!

Pictured above is the Pentax Q10 with the DA 50mm F1.8 lens adapted.

Hungry to adapt even more lenses on your Q?  You can get an adapter for just about any mount, including M42, mu43, Nikon F, and Canon FD lenses!  With the prices of a Q dropping below $250, you shouldn't be afraid to give the camera a shot and experiment with it!

Thanks zos, PM sent. Much appreciated.

A customer brought a Q in to the store a couple of weekends ago and he had a D-Mount to Q Adapter. He was running a bunch of old Bolex lenses on it and talk about cool effect. Probably one of the neater gadgets I've seen in a while.

I got mine from B&H earlier this week and am still getting used to it. It's quite a piece of machinery. It's made me re-evaluate the Q system. This adapter is a game changer. I wish it was cheaper and talked electronically to lenses that could talk back but that aside, it's really another dimension for the Q.

P38...if need be message me. I will help you somehow.

I wonder if eBay item 170962060729 does the same thing. Otherwise I might need to prevail upon a fellow Pentax user in the USA to forward the Fotodiox item.

p38arover [Delete] Dec 19th, 2012 2:39AM

I'd buy the Fotodiox unit but they don't ship outside the US. Curses! I was hoping to try it with my DA*60-250 :D

The 5.5x crop factor is actually the 35mm equivalent, not the Pentax DSLR equivalent which has its own crop factor of 1.54x (I think), so a 300mm on the Q is like a 1650mm on a full-frame, or a 1070mm on an APS-C body like a K-5.

I'm seriously considering a Q and one of these, but I'm afraid of what my wife would say/think even though it's a great value for long telephoto shooting compared to buying a 400+mm lens for APSC. Probably time to be patient...I'll be getting a DA15 Limited for Christmas.

More expensive than the camera but with my 100-300 sigma f4 I would have a 1650mm equivalent telephoto lens. Hmmmm
