New Pentax Products to be Shown at CP+

4 Referential Exhibitions at the largest photo show in Japan · 02-06-2014 · By PF Staff in Pentax News
New Pentax Products to be Shown at CP+

From February 13 through 16 the annual CP+ Photo Imaging Trade Show will take place in Japan. PentaxForums will have staff on site and we will report on Pentax-related news, which you'll be able to read about on our homepage.  We will also be interviewing Pentax representatives at the show, and videos will be uploaded to our Youtube channel.

Based on today's press release from Pentax, we already know some details about what we can expect at the show.  Prototypes of the products listed below will be shown as a "referential exhibition" and will be officially announced later this year.

  1. A new 645D medium format camera with a CMOS sensor and a tilting LCD monitor, two features that hint at this new camera being equipped with live view. The new 645D will also have a faster processor than its predecessor. This new camera should become available in the Spring of 2014.
  2. An ultra-wide angle zoom lens for the 645D
  3. A telephoto macro lens for the Q-System
  4. A film copier accessory for DSLR cameras allowing for convenient copying of 35mm as well as medium format (120/220) film

In addition to these new items, the new WG-4/WG-20 waterproof compact cameras and the HD Pentax-DA 1.4x Rear Converter will be on display for the public to try.

We find it exciting and very promising for the future of Pentax that a new 645D camera is being introduced. It is also nice to see that another quality lens is being introduced for the Q-System. Clearly Ricoh is investing in the Pentax brand.

Read on for more product photos.

I hope the film copier is not too expensive, I have several negatives to be scanned and I'd like to do it by myself...

Daedbird [Delete] Feb 24th, 2014 10:43AM

I really wish they would have given stats and specs for the 645

Adam [Delete] Feb 16th, 2014 2:54PM

Katzeye makes those kinds of screens if you need one Hogdriver.

Hogdriver [Delete] Feb 16th, 2014 10:34AM

Any idea of Pentax marketing a split focusing screen for K20d, K5IIs or K3?
It would be extremely useful for manual focus lenses.

NotSteve [Delete] Feb 14th, 2014 8:27AM

@aglet, that's not the focal length, it's the filter size.

aglet [Delete] Feb 14th, 2014 1:11AM

40.5mm for the Q's new macro?!?... That's a nice long focal length for that system.
Might be able to sneak up on some bugs with that.

LFLee [Delete] Feb 13th, 2014 7:31PM

wow, people actually think 645D II can be price like a A7r or D800E??? it is medium format (although smaller than the film medium format 645)!

It is the cheapest digital MF system you can buy, and price very competitively, compare to other MF system like Hassy and PhaseOne, they are priced in the 20-50k range.

rjm623 [Delete] Feb 10th, 2014 12:54PM

Wow, that camera looks awesome! Too much camera for me, but I'm surprised more professionals aren't using this system.

ebk [Delete] Feb 7th, 2014 3:15AM

the new Q-mount telephoto marco is welcome!!!!

hkiran1 [Delete] Feb 7th, 2014 1:57AM

Now if they can make a mirrorless ICL with that medium format...

j0n4hpk [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 10:32PM

Don't get rid of your Pentax 35 mm SLR cameras yet, friends. If you have a 15 - 24 mm FA or A lens, you can mount it even to a lowly K1000 and get that wide view that only a 10 mm or 12-24 mm Zoom DA lens can give you on APS DSLR format Pentax bodies. With the film copier, you can digitize those wonderful views.

jfuqua11 [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 8:06PM

That 645D upgrade looks gooood. I wish I could afford it, though. Still, with its CMOS sensor I'm interested in seeing whether it's good enough for sports." I doubt it will be good for sports... it is a medium format which is best for landscape and studio work.

novsky [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 7:00PM

Happy that Ricoh does great job with 645
Look at he's equipment list:

SMcGuire45 [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 6:29PM

@dcshooter...yes, I understand the difference. I'm hoping for $5-$7k...not a list of say $12k. Can't wait to see samples from it!

dcshooter [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 6:02PM

@SMcGuire, if by "competitive," you mean "within an order of magnitude," you will probably satisfied. Considering that the original 645d launched at over $10k for the body and still sells for $7k, I think you are likely to be disappointed.

@diego: Waist-level viewfinders were standard fare for MF film (including the Pentax 67)cameras for decades. This is simply a continuation of this tradition, and I wouldn't exactly call it useless considering its value in the studio.

striker_ [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 5:35PM

Instead of a FF-camera they give us the film copying thingy to satisfy the FF needs. :)

diegosantini [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 3:54PM

Tilting LCD for camera bodies are simply USELESS! Pentax is known for his tough construction, tilting LCD screens are only a weakness. What is not there it does not break!

raphtze [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 3:31PM

the slide copier looks like a great idea hehehe :)

jimr-pdx [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 2:47PM

The 645-II shows no LV button in views I've seen, but it must be around there somewhere. And perhaps 'RICOH' is stamped into the plastic behind the tilt screen, to keep raving from Pentax fanatics from flooding their servers? :^)

Bummer about the DA zooms, I'd love to hear more...

SMcGuire45 [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 1:42PM

Curious what the specs are on the new uwa for the 645? Also, any early thoughts on the price on the new medium format? Hopefully it's competitive to the D800e and the Sony A7r.

filoxophy [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 10:44AM

I am definitely eyeing up that film duplicator. The PR specifically mentions silver halide films, so I hope they also take into consideration color negatives. Much tougher to correct for, given the many emulsions out there.

AndrewG NY [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 10:43AM

No "RICOH" on the back of the 645D 2014? OSS on the DFA645 ultra-wide is a little surprising if true. Wonder what the specs on the new Q-mount lens are, hopefully it's f/2 or faster.

Kendigitize [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 9:22AM

I hope the 1.4 teleconverter is at a price we can all afford. I'm hoping for $299 or less since the Q converter is $200.

I have an epson scanner with slide and 35mm film attachments that works quite well. The bellows looks interesting though.

6BQ5 [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 9:12AM

Wow! This could be the beginning of a number of a great things! :)

dcshooter [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 8:30AM

Interesting to see the slide/film copier. I've copied a number of 120 negatives using a k5, FA 50mm macro an old x-ray lightbox, and judicious use of Photoshop's stitching feature. They did come out quite well, but required substantial tweaking in Lightroom to get the color balance right on the reversals.

Hopefully Pentax will include software or profiles that are good at removing the orange cast from negatives effectively.

kadajawi [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 8:25AM

Slide copier? Yay. But how much will it be? Does it come with the required optics? I'd love to be able to "scan" all our old family photos, and then sell it to someone else who wants to do the same.

@gosman: From what I heard professional scanning services use devices like that, because, well, good quality and speed.

@topace: Since the 645D will probably be most likely be used in a studio environment, where it is useful to have that tiltable screen... I think it will be fine.

gosman [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 8:12AM

Slide copier? I'm curious? Is this better than scanning your slides with a very good scanner?

sunfog [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 7:00AM

Eager to tell that the k-mount roadmap was already updated!!!

70-200 STAR telezoom looks very promising!

Also PENTAX K-mount LENSES and ACCESSORIES(5.3MB/Japanese only) catalog was updated too!

adrianpglover [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 6:43AM

Somehow I was expecting something a bit more from them in 1Q14, particularly in the DSLR market. It is nice to see the slide copier coming back into style. I've got a set of slides that I'd like to convert and I know my mother has a lot more.

WillWeaverRVA [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 6:35AM

That 645D upgrade looks gooood. I wish I could afford it, though. Still, with its CMOS sensor I'm interested in seeing whether it's good enough for sports.

paulm [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 4:33AM

@Barbarosa - I'm eyeing up that film copier and thinking the same thing. This is going to make DSLR scanning of 120 films a whole lot easier. RAW scans with the K-3 of 120 film out of my 645n? The ultimate MF camera setup and much cheaper than a 645d!

topace [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 3:29AM

Gah, tiltable LCD. Well, best case it's user replaceable. Worst case at least we might see a slew of screenless 645Ds on ebay in the upcoming years.

geomez [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 3:06AM

I hope to see that tilting LCD on future dslr bodies.

Barbarosa [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 2:34AM

MF and LV, just make focus peeking with that and ultimate MF is created

JohnBee [Delete] Feb 6th, 2014 1:48AM

It says Pentax on it
That makes me feel very good :)

I hope the price will remain in the same region as the previous model.
