In-depth look at Pentax's latest ultra-compact mirrorless

By PF Staff in Review Announcements on Sep 17, 2013

Today we're happy to be bringing you our in-depth review of the Pentax Q7, the latest member of Pentax's lineup of ultra-compact interchangeable lens cameras.

The Q7 represents the first major upgrade to the Q-mount family of cameras. Although Pentax released their second Q-mount body, the Q10, just last year, it was identical to the original Q in almost every way except for its appearance.  While the Q7 and Q10 share the same casing, on the inside, they are completely different.

Pentax has brought a plethora of changes and improvements to the Q7.  First and foremost, they have fitted it with a new 1/1.7-inch sensor that is some 50% larger than the old 1/2.3" sensor, promising improved image quality.  The Q7's menu system has seen a facelift, with almost every screen being changed in some way.  Its performance and startup time has been improved, and the autofocus system has been overhauled. Despite these modifications, the Q7 of course continues to be a niche camera appealing primarily to those who prioritize small size above all else, and who crave the ability to swap lenses.

If you're a current Q user, you might be surprised by the improvement in image quality that the Q7 brings to the table.  We've devoted much of our review to comparing the Q7 to its predecessors, but we also evaluate the Q7 on its own, from the standpoint of a prospective buyer interested in a mirrorless camera.  We hope you find the review helpful in deciding whether or not the Q7 is right for you!

Pentax K-500 In-Depth Review Posted

A review of the latest entry-level DSLR from Pentax

By PF Staff in Review Announcements on Aug 18, 2013

Today we're happy to be bringing you our in-depth review of the Pentax K-500, the new entry-level DSLR from Pentax that was launched alongside the weather-sealed K-50.  The K-500 promises to be a very successful camera, as it is the only current entry-level DSLR to offer a pentaprism viewfinder with 100% coverage as well as dual control wheels.

If you've already read our K-50 review, you won't find any surprises in our evaluation of the K-500.  This is because the K-500 is identical to the K-50, except that the following features have been stripped from it:

  • Weather sealing
  • Viewfinder AF point display
  • Electronic level display
  • Image auto-rotation

Because the K-500 is simply a slightly more basic version of the K-50, its price has been reduced considerably.  The K-500 can be your for just $599 with the 18-55mm kit lens.  That's about $150 cheaper than the K-50 if we factor in the value of the lens, which is well below the launch prices of current-gen competing cameras.

In the coming months, we plan on posting a comparative review of the Pentax K-500/K-50, Nikon D3200, Nikon D5200, Canon T5i, and Canon SL1.

An in-depth review of Pentax's new weather-sealed DSLR

By PF Staff in Review Announcements on Aug 5, 2013

Today we are happy to be bringing you our in-depth review of the Pentax K-50, the latest weather-sealed DSLR from Pentax.  Targeted at the upper entry-level market, the K-50 has a host of innovative and unique features (within its class), such as a 100%-coverage viewfinder, and it uses the same tried-and-tested sensor that was found in the Pentax K-30.

Even though the K-50 lags behind the competition in areas such as video recording and autofocus speed, it holds its ground very well when it comes to image quality and features.  Furthermore, we find the K-50 to be an exceptional value, if not the best value that we've seen to date in a Pentax DSLR.  This is because it was launched at a price of just $779 with a weather-sealed kit lens, which is $170 cheaper than what a comparable K-30 kit cost a year ago.  It is also $20 cheaper than its closest current competitior, the Nikon D5200.  The K-50 body-only kit is available for just $699.  All K-50 kits are currently in stock at major retailers in the US.

Apart from its lower price and cheaper kit lens options, however, the K-50 is hardly any different from the previous-generation K-30.  Even though it's an excellent camera, might you be better off by opting for a K-30?  Read the full review to find out, and to see exactly what's new in the K-50.

Fujifilm X100s In-depth Review

By PF Staff in Review Announcements on Jul 22, 2013

We recently reviewed the Ricoh GR and Nikon Coolpix A enthisiast compacts (Ricoh GR vs. Nikon Coolpix A Review). Both have a fixed focal length lens and an APS-C sized sensor.

If you're looking for a compact enthusiast camera and want one with a built-in viewfinder, the Ricoh and Nikon mentioned above won't cut it, but the Fujifilm X100S may be the answer for you.

We are therefore happy to announce our in-depth review of the Fujifim X100s, a camera which - on the outside - looks exactly like its predecessor the X100 maintaining the retro style. Has the internals been upgraded and the quirks that marred the X100 been removed? Read our review of the X100s to find out!
