Pentax K-3 vs K-5 Hands-On Body Comparison

What ergonomic and interface improvements have been made? · 10-18-2013 · By PF Staff in Pentax Tutorial Videos

Last week we had the opportunity to go hands-on with a pre-production Pentax K-3 in Japan.  Below we present a short video that highlights the changes made to the K-3's button layout and ergonomics.

As the K-3 shown in the video was a pre-production model, we are unable to comment on its performance.  We plan on following up with footage and first impressions of the production model in just over a week.

The Pentax K-3 is the latest flagship DSLR from Pentax.  For more information about its features and highlights, please visit our detailed K-3 overview.

jackassp, it's standard practice not to let sites to post photos taken with preproduction models. Nikon does the same, so you'll have to revise your conclusion.
And they're right; the preproduction models are often significantly worse than the final hardware&software.
I see no reason why the K-3 wouldn't be better than the Toshiba-equipped D7100 and D5200. Yes, I said better.

Cbope, I'm guessing that one of the reasons that the K-5 AF lever was so stiff was the button in the middle (extra friction from seals possibly). On that basis I'm happy with a separate button.

I like the look of the control layouts. I would probably miss the metering switch to start with (until I got used to it) but would not miss the focus selector at all.
Like the direct user modes too (even if it goes from 5 to 3 - thats enough for me).

Why didn't they put the AF mode button in the center of the lever? It seems less ergonomic to have a separate button above the lever, rather in the center. It should be like the back AF button in the selection lever on the K-5. AE-L button seems like it might be more difficult to reach while keeping a good grip too. I do like what they did with the lock switch on the mode dial, very clever.

I have pre-ordered a K3, because my K5 is dying.
But I just can't help but wonder why Ricoh have told previewing sites to NOT post photos.
Are they hiding something, perhaps the high ISO performance just isn't good enough to match the Nikon D7100 or D5200?
It is making me very nervous.

The K-3 is just a little different in a few key ways then the the K-5 II for my use. I like the larger LCD screen. I also prefer the location of the AF button on the K-3. One thing not mentioned here is the K-3 battery life is not as good as the K-5 II. I always use the battery grip with my camera so its not a big issue.

The LCD screen DOES look larger than the specs suggest.
Good job!

Good info - even better since it knocks a Sony cam off of PKForums' opening screen :^)
