Making of "Snow flake"

The winning entry in the December, 2012 monthly contest · Posted on 02-15-2013 in Photo Contests

It was a year ago in February 2012 on holiday on the Slovakian - Hungarian border (at home). Outside it was minus 15 degrees Celsius when snow started to fall. I had seen macro images of snowflakes before so I knew what I wanted.

I paired my much-loved K-5 with my 105mm F2.8 Sigma lens (20mm F1.8 and 50mm F1.4 being my other two FF compatible lenses). Daylight was fading so I  called on my flash for help. No tripod, with the flash it could be a handheld shot and I would try to find some support somehow.

Stepped outside into our garden. Cold. A beautiful winter scenery was starting to form. Opened the diffuser on the flash and started to look for my target. After a few tries around the garden I realized that I would need lots of empty space behind the subject. So I approached one of the fences that are about five feet high with the snow already starting to form on the top of it. Found a nicely shaped snowflake. So small but so nice. It must be cold for snowflakes to form like this.

Leaned against the fence with a wide stance, rested my left hand and the end of the lens on the fence and tried to compose a shot while holding my breath. It took some time and a few shots to get the sensor of the K-5 parallel with the snowflake so as to get it all in focus. Also, the subject was very close to the lens so DOF was extremely shallow so step by step I stopped the lens down taking a shot every stop. At F6.7 the batteries in the flash gave up. Reviewed the raws on the LCD and was happy.

Making of: Sports Photo Contest Winner

"European Champion Synchronised Swimming 2012" · Posted on 01-27-2013 in Photo Contests

Last May I had a chance to use the Pentax 645D for some time. An opportunity I got from the Dutch representative for Pentax and my shop FotoLooman. Initially I thought I could have it for a long weekend so I was shifting with the time so that I could get it on a free weekend. I had a lot of accreditation for various sports events in that period, which is my main subject for photography. I ended up having the 645D for 15 days and had a nice set of lenses to use with it as well.

This image was taken at the European Championship Synchronized Swimming 2012 held in the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swimming Stadium, which is the National Swimming centre of The Netherlands and is located just 15 km from my home. This is an image from the final Combination (group of 10) held on the closing day for the event on Sunday evening. This is in the small pool where also the EC Diving was held, but still this is large for the 645D and the FA*645 300mm F4 lens I had for his event (this lens compares to a 160mm lens on a K-5). The image could use a 400mm lens, but I also could use more light to work with. This image was taken of the European Champion Spain, which was the favorite from the beginning of this tournament. So I practiced on some of the other teams to get my working that evening sharp for the right team.

Making of "Fly Fishing"

October "The Outdoors" photo contest winner · Posted on 12-09-2012 in Photo Contests

The main element about making of this picture was being in the right place at the right time.  This was taken at Yellowstone National Park along the Madison River.  I was there with my two sons and a nephew.  We were staying in West Yellowstone and the night before was a late night.  I woke up early and decided to drive into the park while the boys slept.  I had the 55-300mm on the camera as I was looking for wildlife.  I pulled over to this area and there was this fantastic mist coming off the river and a light fog above.  It was bright enough as the sun was trying to burn through.  I probably could have used a little wider lens, but there was no time to change it.  I waited and got the fisherman in mid cast, took another shot, and within two minutes the fog and the mist were replaced with sunshine.
