It's official the Sigma 70-200 F2.8 is no longer!

Sent a message to Sigma asking about availability of the 70-200 F 2.8. Here is their reply.

"Good afternoon,

It is true that the Pentax version of the 70-200 has been discontinued. Unfortunately, sales of Pentax versions of lenses were low enough that our parent company didn’t think it was financially feasible to continue producing them. We are continuing to support the Pentax system as most of our new lenses are being made with a Pentax version.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great day!

Best regards,

Michael Sinnott
Sales Operations Supervisor
Sigma Corp of America"

This is concerning. You must also keep in mind the Tamron is only available in their old model and the new high end glass is also not available in the Pentax K mount nor is the Tamron 150-600 Pentax will need to offer a winder range of lenses themselves or become insignificant no matter what bodies they release. Was looking hard at a K-3 but now I'm going to wait and see what develops.

That is unfortunate.

FYI the K-3 and Sigma OS 70-200 2.8 is a delightful combo for sports.

Rather than wait I would try to snap up one of the remaining in stock lenses before they are relegated to rare status such as the Sigma 100-300 f4. Sigma APO 100-300mm F4 EX DG Lens Reviews - Sigma Lenses - Pentax Lens Review Database

I was wonderring about it yesterday, I couldn't find it at Adorama or at B&H... Even Henry's (in canada) don't have any.

Whoever wants to get one of the few remaining new ones, thecamerastore.com (again, in canada) was still showing stock yesterday

This is bad news.

Overall it's a mixed bag. The 18-35 came out in Pentax mount. I think some or most of the other art glass came out in Pentax mount. The 120-300 never did, and now the 70-200 doesn't either. There's a lot of great 70-200's out there in other mounts so it's a shame that the K-mount suffered this loss.

Sigma is revamping their lens lines to their new "Global Vision" scheme and a refresh of the 70-200/2.8 is likely in the works to that end. I would expect that a Pentax version of the lens will reappear after that.

In the short term though, this is bad news, but isn't Pentax going to be adding a DA* 70-200 to the mix in the near future?

That's a great news

I (still) have both, Sigma and Tamron 70-200mm F2.8 for Pentax. Yes, not OS, but still...

And Tamron is out of stock in most parts of Europe. On Ebay, only one Europe store has it in stock.

Why? 70-200 is a FF lens. Pentax has the 50-135 and 60-250...

I think that at the moment, there are just as many Global Vision lenses not available for Pentax than there are which are available...

Ask Pentax. It's their roadmap.

That's too bad. Earlier this year I picked up a used copy of the first version, EX APO, of this lens and was extremely happy with the sharp, crisp images it produced. I've since complimented it with the two matching Sigma teleconverters (1.4 & 2X) for a little extra reach. It can get a bit heavy, but the results are worth it.

Worried to see the sticker price on a Pentax branded lens, I doubt it will fit into my budget. I'm guessing it will approach $2,400 .... Not at all competitive with the aftermarket lenses just like cannon and Nikor branded lenses. I don't have the budget to buy branded glass and if this is all that is available I will forced to run from Pentax. I love the function and quality in the Pentax Bodies so it won't be an easy choice but like other choices, it may be wallet driven.

Years ago now, sigma discontinued the APO70-200F2.8 EX DG. The lenses, on the used market were going for more than the price of a new lens. This went on for about a year and then sigma came back to their senses and began producing them again in pentax mount. But maybe this time, they have decided the market is saturated. Who knows?

The 70-200mm 2.8 is an absolute must have lens for the sports shooter. The 50-135mm 2.8 is so slow in focusing that I sold it and bought the Sigma 50-150mm instead - much better for fast action. The 60-250 is an f4 which is fine for bright light outdoor action (albeit a little short), but useless at night or indoors for sports.

That Sigma 70-200 is easily my favorite long lens, even accounting for the weight.

I have a bunch in the 135 to 300 range, and get ok optical results from two of the old/odd 135mm's for less weight, but they are only good for portraits as they are MF.

I have the 50-135 too - and although it's pretty good optically - almost as good as the Sigma - it's a bit short and the SDM is slow-ish (terrible on the K10/20D's, not bad on the K5, better on the K3?) but reliability sucks - I'm on my 4th or 5th repair/replacement now.

The only thing that would make me wait to snag a Sigma before they are gone is if the Pentax 70-200 was WR. Will it be?
