Has my DA 18-135 WR gone kaput?

I’ve had my DA 18-135 WR for a couple years now, and it has been my go to lens in most instances. Recently I spent a day shooting with it and there were no issues. When I got home I took it out to shoot some more, and to my dismay, the lens would not focus. Everything was out of focus, regardless of how I turned the focus ring or used autofocus. I’ve found that when I orient the lens vertically (front element facing the sky) the focus works again, but when returned to a level position, the focus once again stops working. Something sounds slightly loose when I turn the lens upside down and right side up again. I am just wondering if it can be amended or if its time to replace this lens.

Ouch. Certainly sounds like something's gone wrong in there. You could send it to the repair centre Precision Camera - Digital Camera Repair, Video Camera Repair and see what they say.

Remember that if you bought the lens new, you probably have a 2nd year warranty through the credit card you purchased it with. So you might check the exact day you bought it.
