Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the knockout round of the Greatest Pentax Lens Tournament! The rules are simple: Two lenses enter. You must choose one. The winner moves to Knockout Round Two. The loser is gone. Check out the bracket here, which is based on the user nomination results.

In this short telephoto knockout match, the SMC Pentax-DA 70mm F2.4 Limited faces the SMC Pentax 85mm F1.8.

The DA70 has to win this heat. Optically it is virtually flawless, and it is uniquely tiny for a high-end portrait lens. There are other 85mm lenses which are clearly ahead of the no doubt very fine K.

this is interesting matchup - I have both and at the moment I decided to keep both. K85/1.8 is a better performer of the two, in sharpness and colour rendition - and of course has better bokeh, being longer and faster. BUT DA70/2.4 is a perfect lens when it comes to street photography - unobtrusive, convenient and really fast focusing. A very reliable tool. On the top it just look special with its compact size.
If I ever need to choose one, I will probably go for K85, since it is more difficult to find, faster and longer and offer a tiny bit better performance ..... but it will be though decision.

darn, i've never used the 85/1.8. I did own the DA70 and aside from the fact it is a little slow for a head and shoulders portrait, it is otherwise a perfect little lens. I'm voting for the DA70...
...but I already know this round isn't really gonna count.

I imagine the K 85 was well-respected in it's prime. It's one of those now-rare, exquisite lenses.
