Unless you need the weather sealing, go for the Sigma IMO.

The Pentax 16-50 2.8 of course. Quite focus, sharp, and weather resistant. On sale for $847 now at BH Photo. A bargain compared with that cheap Sigma lens!

Other than the low price, there is no justification for calling the Sigma 17-50mm f/2.8 EX DC HSM "cheap". Maybe you are confusing it with the Tamron 17-50, which does have lower build quality.

The EX designation means it is part of the Sigma pro lens line, and I can assure you, it is very well built. HSM means it has silent and fast auto-focus. Sharper wide open than the comparable Tamron or Pentax according to my research. The down sides are; no WR, zoom and focus rings turn the wrong way, no quick-shift. Great price though, I'm very pleased with mine.

PENTAX 16-50mm F2.8 : BUY AND PRAY .If you can buy a good copy, with the SDM working, then you will have a lens with quiet focus, however inconsistent, inaccurate and slow. But if the SDM is broken, then it will be completely quiet, so quiet that it will not be moving at all.LOL .....Another point is: why you need a WR for a indoor event ?

Check the seller's feedback. I look for overwhelmingly positive feedback for sellers. Also check return policy. If they don't accept returns then be a little more cautious. Even at that you still have recourse through ebay and Paypal if you don't get what was advertised, just a bit more effort.

As for which, I'd tend to agree with Adam. I got the DA 16-50 for the weather-sealing since I live in the Pacific NW. IQ-wise I doubt you'd see a lot of difference. They're both good lenses. The Sigma leaves money in your pocket for your next lens.

uh oh- grey market lens- no US warranty. Or international warranty! Pentax 16-50 2.8 often listed for about $850 sometimes with 3 year extended warranty. Will pay off for that nice and quite SDM motor if it fails.
