What (very) good wide angle for K1 ?

Hello,

I'm looking for a wide angle lens to replace my pentax 12-24 which is not fully compatible with the K1. What (very) good fixed focal lens would you recommend (not necessarily pentax branded) ?

Thank you for your advices

FA20/2.8, DFA15-30/2.8 and FA*24/2.0 all have their charms.
Horses for courses.

There are many opinions about that: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/190-pentax-k-1/314332-best-wide-angle-lens-k-1-a.html

Hi Cmely,

I have the SMC Pentax-DA 10-17mm F3.5-4.5 Fish-Eye ED [IF] which I bought for my k3. I assumed it would be useless on the K1 but discovered to my surprise that there is only a minimal loss (sorry I haven't quantified it) of angle on the full frame, mostly because the small built in hood intrudes in the frame.

It might be an option if you give it a try.

cheers

If you want the best IQ possible to match the K1 for resolution only its the following :
1. DFA15-30
2. Samyang 14/2.8
3. Zeiss 15 (hard to find / or Leitax it from F mount)

Thats about it for now, though to be frank about it, there's already a cheap choice, a branded choice and a zoom choice.

My Sigma 12-24 seems to be pretty good, is FF compatible, and is very wide, Same FOV on the K1 as the Sigma 8-16 has on the K3 and other Pentax APSC cameras. You can't use filters on it, but it is pretty good.

The FA* 24mm ƒ2 and A 20mm 2.8 are two of my favorites.

As I recently said elsewhere on the forum today, if you can live with manual focus, I could recommend any of these older legacy lenses to get the job done, SMC Pentax-A 15mm F3.5, SMC Pentax-A 20mm F2.8, SMC Pentax-A 24mm F2.8 and even SMC Pentax-A 28mm F2.8 at a push.

I agree the Pentax-A primes are worth looking at...only thing they lack is autofocus. My two favorite FF lenses have always been a 24 and 35 equivalents Next comes a classic fast 50 and then either a 100/105 or a 135. My Leica kit has been 24/35/50/90 for many years. I have a Pentax-A 24 2.8 that I use on my K-3 and whenever I have thought of selling it, all I had to do was shoot a few frames and the thought goes away. 20/21 equivalents have always been somewhat wider than I like. the DA 15 on my K-3 is essentially a 24 equivalent and is one of my favorites. You might think about the new D FA 24-70 for a one lens option.

Unfortunately , I don´t own yet the K-1 ( hope for the beginning of next year ), but think I´m already well prepared with very good fixed lenses for it .
As wide angles : K 28 f/2, K 28 f/3,5 , A 28 f/2 and FA 31 ltd.
As UWA , perhaps not so stellar as WA are, but ayway also very good lenses IMHO: K 18 f/3,5 and K 24 f/2,8
Hope all of my oldies WA and UWA shall work good on K-1with its 36 MP sensor.

Every one seems to agree that the 15~30 is an outstanding wide zoom, but one caveat about the 15~30: it is a beast, very big and heavy. Had one and pretty much as soon as I opened the box decided I would constantly be leaving it behind because of the bulk & weight. The best always-in-your-pocket ultrawide is surely the 10~17, even if you lose the edges & corners.

You are absolutely right! I had my hands on 15-30 and 70-200, and they scared me! Both the optical performance (in positive way) and the size and weight.
I went back to try FAJ 18-35, Tamron 17-35 and Sigma 12-24 for wide zoom. I always prefer primes, but one zoom with good (enough) optical performance, lighter in weight and not that high price tag will be a good thing to have, just in case.
Unfortunately my backyard is not suitable for testing super wide lenses, and I still didn't get chance to take them away from home for testing. I might post a review if I get a chance to do it.

For what it's worth, despite its size and weight, I have decided to take my DFA15-30 on my impending trip to England and Ireland. A one lens wide option with weather sealing was too attractive to ignore.
