I need one more lens.......

I have to admit, I jumped ship over to Nikon a couple years ago. Right wrong or indifferent, I did it. Just wanted to come clean on that.

My 3.80gpa 18 year old daughter is starting college this fall and she is a very creative person and she decided to break out the K100D and two kit lens (18-80 Tamron and a 70-300 Sigma) I gave her 3 years ago. She is a very fast learner and already understands the basics of how cameras work, but I want to get her one "decent" lens to add to the kit lens.

What would be your recommendation? Looking for something fairly fast. Thought about a prime lens. Not sure. Thoughts?

The DA 50/1.8 is inexpensive enough to also throw in the DA 35/2.4.

How much do you want (or are willing) to spend?
Something wider then 18mm, or something faster than f/2.8 would be my top two priorities.

I would say any of these DA 21, 40 or 70. For the price the DA 40 is excellent.

Since we don't know what she shoots, maybe use Exposure Plot to see what focal lengths she uses a lot and go from there. There's just too many good lenses to make a blind recommendation.

hmmmmmmm..........she enjoys taking closeups of flowers and bees and such for now. That's about all I got to go on.

Had not picked up a K100D in years (using a Nikon D7000 now). Forgot how much I had liked that body. I always thought the colors the camera put out were always top notch. Brought back a lot of memories since I used that camera for thousands of pics of my girls.

Edit: and since college is soooooooo expensive, trying to keep this last "decent" lens under $200.

I was going to suggest a used Tamron 17-50. Finding out what focal lengths she uses most is a really good idea though.

I guess my question was "painting with a broad brush"..........I don't think she is really that interested in taking pics of sports. She seems to like to get up close to stuff and take pics......flowers, bees on flowers, artistic kind of stuff.

Am leaning towards a prime lens for now. They are inexpensive and give very sharp results.

I consider the 17-50's to be high quality, versatile, walk-about lenses. I don't think of them as sports lenses.

Maybe a 40mm XS and a couple extension tubes with aperture control? Should be well under $200 and be pretty fun to use.

As already mentioned, you can't go wrong with either of the DA35/2.4 or DA50/1.8
Or both.

Sounds like the DA50/1.8 would be a great fit. About $100.

17-50 f/2.8 either Sigma or Tamron.. much wider than your 28-80mm and f/2.8 throughout the focal range..

beyond that, something like a 35mm or 50mm HD macro lens.. if she is really wanting a prime and likes up close.
