One of my photo teachers back in the 1970's taught me to squint when composing a photograph, so that I see the play of light and dark lines and shapes without the detail distracting me. Often when I see a photo that I am particularily attracted to, I do the same squinting, to diagnose why I was drawn to the photo in the first place - hence the reference to "chairoscuro".

And I do appreciate the discussion here in this thread as well. I've been lurking for a while, but have just recently begun more active participation.
