downloaded "kr_v115w" to PC

dragged it over to freshly formatted SD card

insert into K-r

hold MENU while turning it on

It displays PENTAX K-R VER 1.00

then comes on.

what am I doing wrong ?

( I tried 3 different SD cards, tried formatting them with windows-7 and the K-r itself )

Are you putting the file in the root? This will be the same level that has the folder DCIM in it.

Make sure your battery is fully charged.

The file also has to be extracted, by default the download is either a .zip or a.exe file. You have to extract the .bin file and put it in the root of the SD card.

As jatrax said, between download and drag to SD is the missing step. The .exe on SD card won't do anything.
