Montezuma Castle
Lens: 50-200mm Camera: K5 Photo Location: Camp Verde, AZ
Posted By: Bob Harris, 11-28-2011, 03:49 PM

The cliff dwellings were built and used by the Sinagua people, northern cousins of the Hohokam, around 700 AD and occupied until 1400 AD. Several Hopi clans trace their roots to immigrants from the Montezuma Castle/Beaver Creek area. Clan members periodically return to their former homes for religious ceremonies. When the cliff dwellings were discovered in the 1860s, they were named for the Aztec emperor Montezuma II, due to mistaken beliefs that the emperor had been connected to their construction.
There is a self-guided, 1/3-mile loop trail leads you past the incredible 5-story cliff dwelling, through a beautiful sycamore grove and along spring-fed Beaver Creek, one of only a few perennial streams in Arizona.

Interesting place Bob... so, does this have anything to do with Montezuma's revenge?

thank you Lori, your kind words are appreciated. Can you imagine having to climb up and down ladders each day to get up to your home and I have always wondered how many children must have fallen at these cliff dwellings

What a difference the light makes

I was there on 2/2/11 in the morning. It was rather below freezing. And the light gave you much nicer effects. Your contrast gave nice relief to the image. Mine was k100DS + Tamron 28-300.

This thing is incredible and you did a great job of capturing it, Bob. Your Arizona pics are making want to see the area again.

Norm, that is what you get when you drink the water, or stupidly forget that ice is made out of their water, and you become violently ill when visiting Mexico and you have to he hospitalized for a couple of days when getting back to California.

Tim, we did have some bright light, but used a hoya filter to suppress it a bit, thanks for adding the image and commenting. It is a great place to visit and go back in time. Bob
