Looking for feedback on these two pictures. The first one was taken with by 18-135 lens and the second with an old manual Access Lens 18-70. Any thoughts on what I did right and what I did wrong?

Both seem a little "busy" to me.... with no real subject, as such. You might try improving the composition by deciding upon the actual subject in the photo, then use quadrant placement. Also, the background tends to blend into the foreground and envelope the subject. Try shooting from an angle that places a darker background behind your main subject so that it isolates it. Also, consider your colors. Some compliment each other, some do not. To MY eyes, the fuchsia colored flowers clash with the green background in Photo #2. Also, in close-up photos of flowers, sharp focus is critical. Loose it and your photos will suffer accordingly. No amount of unsharpmask can make up for lack of sharp focus. Just my .02.

I took the liberty of doing a little PP of my own on your first photo and this was what I would have done with it, had it been mine. I think you had the basic essentials, but just needed to concentrate on the composition and PP a little more. I decreased the gamma quite a bit, bumped the contrast a little and increased the saturation quite a bit. I cropped it so that your main subject was in the upper right quadrant. In retrospect, I went a little too heavy with the unsharpmask! I hate it when I do that!

Dewman, thanks for the suggestions. BTW, the shot was straight from the camera as my personal PC is in the shop and my work laptop won't allow me to load any other software on it,
