Walking with the Sigma 70-300 macro
Lens: Sigma 70-300 macro Camera: K-3 Photo Location: My back yard ISO: 200
Posted By: normhead, 09-18-2014, 08:30 AM

It takes some getting used to, having a minimum focus of 7 feet, but it was just wonderful to have this old lens out again. it was my constant companion for 6 years. It's broken, it doesn't retract when you turn the zoom ring back, but you can set your focal length and just push it back manually, like a push/pull zoom.. It was like going for a walk with an old friend you don't see much anymore...

the theme for the day was Mushroom with Mosses..

Thanks daacon, it feels like since the bear took down our bird feeder, all I shoot is mushrooms these days, getting in the odd dog shot helps break it up a little..

Great captures, Norm. I too have one of the lenses like yours but have yet to use it very much. Your photos are great encouragement to take it for a walk. Thanks for sharing.

It's so hard to get a picture of them if you don't have something that attracts their attention, thanks for commenting.

For landscapes up to 150mm it holds it's own with anything. 200 to 300 at a distance it's not so sharp, but I find it to be good enough under 30 feet. It's also a lot better on a a K-3 than it was on my K20D

It's definitely a mushroom hunting year here, I turn a lot of them down looking for a set up that appeals to me, I photograph maybe one and 20. If you look carefully the woods are flu of them.

My 70-300 broke in the exact same way! Sorry yours went like that, but it does give me a tad of comfort knowing it wasn't my fault when I busted mine. Lovely set of shots, especially the first. As soon as I have a camera that suits the lens I'll have to take mine out for old time sake as well.

I was going to give it to my daughter-in-law, now I'd feel bad about giving her a broken lens... I really think I get much better images with this from the K-3... but the last time I used it extensively was my K100D so that's hardly fair.
