Reflection framing and cropping
Lens: 50mm f2 MF Camera: K2000 Photo Location: Warren, NJ
Posted By: heinamj, 11-25-2014, 06:44 PM

Found this little pond and old broken dock at a new park opened last month from a retired farm.

The 1st shot is uncropped while the vertical transition in the background of the 2nd with the horizontal reflection led me to crop 1:1 to accentuate it. The 3rd shot is uncropped.

I'd appreciate constructive feedback on the framing of the 1st and 3rd and the cropping of the 2nd plus any other ideas how these could have been made better.

I use UFRAW for basic developing and Photoscape to add a little sharpening.

I think the wooden railing in the first is a bit distracting (it's in a third, but it's OOF so it's not the main subject - what is the main subject?).
The second look just about right.
The third, I feel that the jetty is a little bit too centered.
Third one is really beautiful color-wise, though.

All in all, some refinement needed, but definitely worthwile pictures.

Only the third one works for me. Several things compliment each other:
-- The railing and the line of opposite bank
-- The neutral wood in the pier and the colorful backdrop of autumn trees, and on this tact
--- -- The plain foreground and the tapestry of trees w/o a third element of open sky
--- -- The uprights in the pier and the tree trunks
-- And the foreground path and the river bank on the opposite shoreline
And the subject is the pier and the third picture is the only one where I can envision trying to walk out on it.

BTW I should be stronger in my comment:
1. I would not change anything and
2. it looks like it would print well--which is for me the acid test.

Thanks for that... I agree, subject is not obvious in #1.

I think I was trying too hard to be creative in the first two. I'm tempted to make the 3rd one into a puzzle for the local Senior's center.
