More near macro à la projector lens
Lens: Will-Wetzlar Maginon 85/2.8 in a Vivtar zoom body Camera: K-5 Photo Location: Poitiers
Posted By: Jean Poitiers, 11-28-2014, 01:16 AM

Bonjour,

Here's another test sample of a projector lens inserted into a zoom lens with its front element(s) removed.

A Will-Wetzlar Maginon 85/2.8 projector lens replacing the dead front element(s) of a Vivitar zoom. Here, there's use of an aperture via the zoom body.

Not bad for less than 10€ of investment. Ha!

Salut, J

not bad at all as you say, this may be the best image I've seen of yours. Nice work and it seems the price is right.

Thanks Bob.

And yes, it's hard to beat a price/performance ratio like this ... Cheers, J

did you took the lense apart, or just inserted the projector lens on top of it?
are you using the aperture of the lens or the enlarger?
what magnification is it?

Hi.

I removed the front lens element/group because there was coating damage and some fungus there. The rest of the lens was fine, and I picked up this Vivitar lens at my thrift store for about 3€.

The projector lens (that I acquired at a photo swap in a junk bin) was maybe 2€ and it was inserted into the front of the zoom lens with some tape around the projector lens barrel to hold it in a firm position.

I believe that I used the zoom lens aperture here at/about F8 (?) in order to create more DoF. There is not aperture on the projector lens; it's just a plastic tube with glass elements toward the front.

I would say that the magnification here is about 2:1 or somewhere near. Again, this was a test snap and I was quite happy with the result. I need to go back and re-shoot/re-evaluate this "Franken-lens" creation.

Salut, J
