a Prickly Situation
Lens: 50mm f/2.8mm Camera: K5 Photo Location: Camp Verde, Arizona

I took this macro photo of new growth just emerging from a Prickly Pear cactus. When the spines first grow out they are fairly soft and will not start to completely harden for about a week. The spines not only protect the plant but help keep it cool during the summer months. When the wind blows the spines cause the air to circulate around them cooling the plant

I'll tell you buddy, these things pick out an easy target and stick with it when they get a chance.
