As the weather was absolutely foul today, I stayed in and played with some matches.

Thanks purplemelon, it's fairly easy and cheap, tripod and something to hold the matches. No backdrops needed as at 1/5000th and f13 there won't be any light spill. Manual focus set, camera on manual, continuous shooting mode and hold a lighter under the matches, press shutter just before the matches light.
The 2nd and last shot are just mirror images as they looked like it would work. I thought the last kind of looked like some kind of skull. And have fun.
If you give it a go, post up what you get.

Thanks dick897 - I used the settings that you suggested and played around a bit! I ended up with 1/8000 and f8 although my shots do not look as sharp and bright as yours (maybe because I have the 18-55 DAL lens?) I ended up colouring a whole box of matches black as I do not have photoshop (I use C108) and kept having the match appear! Here are the best of my efforts...

All very good shots, i dont have an 18-55 so i cant comment on that, i was using a macro lens. you could try it at f13 again as that seemed to produce the sharpest shot and just reduce the shutter speed to 1/6000 or 1/5000. For focusing i switched to manual and used live view + the info button to zoom so i could nail the focus, then out of live view to take the shots. I get through boxes of matches as well try using more than 1 match, tape a couple together for bigger flare mess around with it. I havent a clue what c108 is
