What kind of bee is this?
Lens: 100mm Pentax WR Camera: K5IIs Photo Location: Saugus Ma. ISO: 100

My black eyed susans are in bloom with an abundance of pollen on the heads. The bees that are there now are no longer than 1/4" at best and they are gathering pollen like no tomorrow as it shows in the photos.Does anyone know what this type of bee is?--charliezap

Not a honey bee. A halictus of some sort, I think. Halictus ligatus are bigger than 1/4 inch, but size estimates are tough.

These photos are good enough to submit to Bug Guide, they'll give you good information for family at the very least.

Yeah, there are loads of the "sweat bees" around once you start looking for them. You should be seeing the longhorned bees too - melissodes like the aster type plants. And of course all the others.

Look up Native Bee Awareness Initiative and join us on Facebook. We're new, and still getting off the ground this year but could always use more photos and members.
