Strapping young lad
Lens: Takumar 200/3.5 Camera: K-01 Photo Location: at the crossroad of excitement & caution

Found this strapping young fella in a nearby field... I pursued him through a lightly wooded area until he decided to take a break - it's been very hot.

now these are great closeup shots, but are you sure he wasn't tracking you. Hope you were using a very long lens.

Thanks, Bob. I was maybe 10 yards away, using the Tak 200/3.5.

If he was indeed tracking me, he was impressively casual about it.

Toss up as to whether you'd taste better than the fruit.

Nice shots, but that's too close--any human-habituated bear (i.e. one that doesn't act "wild") is by definition an unpredictable bear--as last year's fatality of a Rutgers student will attest! Of course, I'm as guilty as anyone--I live in prime black bear habitat here in East Tennessee, so it's easy to become complacent--especially with yearling goofballs like the ones prone to wander through this time of year...I practically had one fall on top of my head early one morning on the UT campus a couple of years back.

This young fella was as sweet-tempered a bear as I've ever encountered - I didn't get a growl or bluff-charge, and only a couple of glances. Probably in a month or two he would be a bit more ill-tempered, driven by a need to feed prior to winter's onset.
