A Visit from the Monarch
Lens: SMC Pentax A 100/2.8 macro Camera: Pentax K5 Photo Location: Waterloo ISO: 1100 Shutter Speed: 1/500s Aperture: F8
Posted By: 8540tomg, 08-04-2015, 02:11 PM

Chanced upon a Monarch butterfly today. Fortunately I had my 100mm macro on the camera instead of my normal 400mm walk about lens. There would have been no chance for a shot with that beast.

These guys used to be a pretty common sight but their populations have declined by 80% since the 1990s.

Good to see one again. It's been a while.

Excellent image, I never heard of a 400mm walk around lens. I have a Tokina 400mm but I would not walk around with all day. True about the butterflies and something we should be more concerned about.

Well I use my DA*200 as a walk about lens here at the lake. Why not 400?

Thanks eaglem.

He was kind enough to settle on a good background for a moment.

Thanks Michael

It may seem strange but I probably carry the 400mm around 90% of the time. Birding is my primary area of interest so it makes sense for me.

Why not indeed. When the 400 isn't mounted I usually carry an old Pentax K 200/2.5.
