Experiment with stacking long exposure shots
Lens: Pentax-M 28mm F3.5 Camera: Pentax K-5 Photo Location: Rotterdam ISO: 100 Shutter Speed: Above 6s Aperture: F8

I took this shot some months ago and am pretty pleased with it. It is composed of 14 stacked long exposure shots after which I did some manual selections for B/W versus color. With some more patience I could have removed some of the glitches in the light trails ... but I don't mind the rough editing. Some more background can be found here. Lens used was the Pentax-M 28mm F3.5, a very sharp beast!

Looks very classy! Was the purpose of the stacking to give you a nice dense exposure of multiple car lights?

Thanks guys and I indeed forgot to mention about that. One single shot just had a few light trails from mostly one single direction. I stacked all the shots and then selected 'lighter color' on the layers. It then only displays the pixels that are lighter compared to the layer beneath. To make it work I also applied masks to leave out unwanted objects, e.g. parked cars.

Selection of 4 layers that were used:
