#239- Nature does have its casualties.
Posted By: charliezap, 04-02-2013, 08:25 AM

Such a thrill for me to be hosting the Weekly Challenge.--When I took the first shot a few years ago I couldn't help but notice that the katydid was missing part of its antenna. I wondered how that came about. The 2nd shot has a dragonfly having a snack on something smaller than him.Nature can be pretty and also brutal. It really is a jungle out there.I've seen nature's creatures that you can tell that they were involved in a struggle to survive and almost made it unscathed. The shot doesn't have to be a closeup or macro.Big or small it is a battle of the fittest so enter a photo that conveys that theme.Any questions feel free to make a comment or PM me.Good luck to all--charliezap

The contest will close on Tuesday April 9th at 6PM my time here in the Boston area.
The fine print....
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread. If it's not obvious, explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme.
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge closes after 7 days, then allows for a day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera will do.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, the winner will PM the #2 winner and pass the baton to that person to be the judge

This is the only shot I have that even remotely fits this challenge.

Dinner is Take-Out

From our last trip. Caught this osprey, having already eaten the head, taking the rest of the fish back to the nest.

Brilliant idea!

This is one I discovered after shooting - kind of a 'Ouch!' moment:

I wasn't sure if either combatant would survive this battle but the heron eventually got it down.

Drowned This deer went through the ice, best I can tell, and when the ice broke up on the lake, the animal was caught on a barely submerged boulder, remaining there for some days before disappearing, presumably floating downriver.

This raccoon made the mistake of tripping in a honey locust tree and was impaled on one of the tree's huge tough thorns.

Changed my entry as I don't know whether there will be another chance to show this image of what appears to be a newly homeless mollusk.

Lovely interpretations already presented so I went in a different direction.
Since we as humans are also part of the natural consumption/casualty chain... I offer a Red Snapper for your consideration.

A significant food source for sea gulls are clams. Usually the gull will break the clam by dropping it on to rocks. In an area where there are no rocks a barnacle encrusted engine block half buried in low tide sand will do.

This is about all I have to match the subject matter - don't mind at all one less fly around here

Here's a couple that are not eligible as taken by my phone - a moose loses a battle with some sort of vehicle which was long gone when I drove by.
