A population of melanistic "black" gray squirrels was imported from Canada in the early 20th C. , and some neighborhoods are dominated by the black variant, whereas others by the more familiar to the U.S. East coast gray variant.

I lived in DC for three years, too. So my college roommate, when I live in Illinois, had some role in a squirrel DNA project I forget the details of. Black squirrels are a color variant of gray squirrels, and the high-melanin coloration is a dominant gene. Given enough time, all squirrels in a population of gray squirrels will be come black and the gray genes won't resurface.

Their coats definitely thicken up for winter.

It's interesting about squirrels, in western Ohio we have gray and fox squirrels, I see many more gray squirrels, and never see fox squirrels in town. In my neighborhood we have lots of gray squirrels, ranging in colors from reddish brown to black, they were probably 50% black a couple years ago, right now they are nearly all gray, or gray brown. With all of that I don't have a squirrel photo to share, so I'll go with horses. I had Monday off, so took a drive through a wildlife area and didn't get much of anything, barred owl high in a tree behind branches, saw Kestrels, Harriers, and a bald eagle when I couldn't shoot them. I was really after Northern Saw Whet Owls or Long Eared Owls but struck out. So I came back through the Amish country and had better luck.
