52-7-13-Ideas-human response – gesture, body language, and expressions
Posted By: scomatic, 03-31-2015, 09:37 PM

Welcome to PROJECT 52-7 for the year 2015.

PROJECT 52-7-13-Ideas-human response – gesture, body language, and expressions

Images for Project 52-7-13 are to be taken between the 31 March 2015 Tuesday and 6 April 2015.

Rules
1. Anyone and everyone interested in the challenge is eligible. The goal continues to be have fun and share comments, concepts, insights, and techniques
with fellow Pentaxians.
2. Each week will feature a Theme and Sub-concept for you to explore.
3. Post your single picture in Project 52-7 thread for the week. Explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly
theme.
4. Some post-processing is OK (adjusting white balance, exposure, color saturation), but let's try to stay away from heavily PP'ed images here. Try to
keep the creativity to photographic techniques and the captures themselves.
5. Since this project is about technique, and not camera, shots taken by non Pentax cameras are allowed.Cameras may be SLRs, DSLRs, Point & Shoot,
Medium Format, et cetera.
6. There is one “Theme Concept” labeled “black and white,” but feel free to post black and white, sepia, monotone, etc., for any of the other themes.
7. The picture you post should be taken during the week in which the theme is active to be eligible for judging.
8. Any picture taken from thread start date to listed closing date is acceptable. You may request to submit a photo outside of the time frame, but its
acceptance is dependent on the judge of the week. Please try and keep to within a day or two (either way) of the week. This is to make allowances for
those that would like to participate, but for one or other reason, are not able to do so during the time given for the challenge, such as illness, weather,
travelling etc.
9. The WINNER of each weekly challenge is the JUDGE of the next week's Project 52-7
10. JUDGE may participate the challenge, but the picture of JUDGE will be comment by 2nd and 3rd WINNER, and there is no podium place for JUDGE's picture. *** New Rules ***
11. The Facilitator (in this case scomatic) may participate in the challenge, provided he/she is not the judge.
12. Closing date for the challenge is Monday at midnight in your time zone, this will encourage people to snap the picture during weekend and post it up on next days. Late entries are accepted but subject to the acceptance by the current weeks JUDGE. ** Amendment **

JUDGE need to provide either with Option A or Option B or Both AB options criteria when during JUDGEMENT *** New Rules ***:

- Colour and/or tonal rendition
- Contrast
- Lighting

Visual and aesthetic criteria
- Framing and choice of viewpoint
- Background
- Design elements and principles
- Visual impact

Content
- Emotion / Mood /Feeling
- Relevance

Viewer’s response
- Excitement
- Interest

OPTION B (Good / Bad comment)
Example:
the good: Composition is perfect, I like your lighting. blah blah blah
the bad: I think levelling the horizon would be better, the blown out highlights on top left are distracting to me. blah blah blah.

One of the most important ways to express human values in travel photography is to use the language of the body, gesture, and facial responses to tell the story. Watch the eyes, hands, and arms of your subjects. What do they say? How people hold themselves, how they use personal space, and how they gesture can speak volumes in a photograph. The most effective way to capture human response is to shoot candidly, without posing. Let people be themselves, act naturally and spontaneously, and their movements and expressions will tell you their own stories through their responses. If you must pose a subject, never ask them to strike the pose of your choosing. Instead, allow them to gradually assume positions and expressions that are natural and spontaneous.

Hint: when you are shooting candid responses, a long telephoto lens (400mm) comes in handy. People usually react more spontaneously when you are shooting from a distance. Burst shooting (multiple frames) can work well here as well. You can stand at a distance, hold the shutter button down, and fire a continuous flow of exposures and then select the expressions, gestures and body language that best tell your story.

7 WAYS TO CAPTURE
1. No “cheese”, please.
2. Capture the mood of your subject.
3. Anticipate a “moment”.
4. Shoot after the “moment”
5. Look for and photograph moments in between poses.
6. The “eyes” have it.
7. Look for the details.

This should be interesting, though I note that all the examples given are of children.

Failed

It seems nobody is entering anything...
Well, I captured this expression of my youngest son, while failing the basket, playing basketball with his brothers and cousins yesterday afternoon.

I've shot this selfie last night, it's not a candid shot, but I guess could fit the theme.

You can read the poem behind the shot in flickr, I didn't include it here as this challenge is about the gesture not the story behind it?

Never thought I would see the day that I submit a photo using my cell phone, but I guess at 13M pixels, its not too bad. Just did not register that I should take an image for this challenge. Anyway, I got this as I tried out my new phone.

I had thought I had submitted an entry, but I was either mistaken or it has disappeared (although I would expect that if it had been pulled I might have gotten an explanation). In any event, if it was pulled it might have been due to a question as to whether a release might be needed from one or more of the individuals whose faces appeared in the image and to avoid any question of this matter, I have pulled this photo (as well as 2 alternate photos I was considering from the same photo shoot) from my Flickr page and I think I will just sit out this week's topic out of fairness to those who have submitted on time.

I am looking forward to peaceful landscapes.

Scomatic - Thanks, but I'd rather not at this time. I'm not a good subject for a selfie and I don't have confidence that I could appropriately post any of the 3 street shots I took. I still don't know what happened with the entry I thought I had submitted. And I have been involved in several other photo projects, so I think it most prudent to just pass this round. Thank you for the invitation however.
