#321 - Something's Wrong
Posted By: Hattifnatt, 04-08-2015, 12:19 PM

Welcome to Weekly Challenge #321 - Something's Wrong

Thanks to Mehrdad for the last challenge as well as for the comments on each entry.

A few days ago I was watching "Alien" (1979). In my opinion what makes the movie so great is the constant feel of uneasiness. Right from the beginning you have a feeling that something is wrong. It's not just the monster, it's the atmosphere and the way it makes you feel. I think it would be interesting to see this theme exploited in your pictures.

Maybe the “WRONG” in your photo is obvious, or maybe it’s quite subtle and takes a deeper look to notice – help your viewers to understand what’s “wrong” in your picture.

A few examples from my side below (first one from our forum member Rondec).

The fine print:
Every week, a new theme is picked and judged by the winner of the previous week.

The Challenge will run until midnight next Wednesday, April 15, 2015, whichever time zone you are in.

Rules
1. Post ONE photo (max 1024x1024).
2. The photo must portray an interpretation of the theme.
3. Post your single picture in this thread and explain what motivated you to take the picture and/or how you feel it represents the weekly theme (especially if it's not obvious).
4. The challenge is interactive. Any response is welcome.
5. The judge will pick the WINNERS and choose one of them to be the judge for the next week.
6. This challenge runs for 7 days plus an additional day for the judge to choose the winners.
7. Any Pentax (or Samsung DSLR) camera can be used.
8. Pictures can be from any time frame, not just within the week of the current theme.
9. In case the winner of a challenge is unable to become the judge for the next challenge, they will PM the #2 winner for that person to be the judge.

"Books invite all. They constrain none". That is the motto on the Los Angeles Public Library. I wonder how long it will take for some people to see what is wrong in this picture? It was only when he moved to get more comfortable did I realise it was more than a pile of rubbish.

Just don't topple over

As certified ice divers would know, the dreaded incident pit is looming around, given the amount of wrong elements in that situation: untethered diver, uninflated wing, low on air, no fins to control movement once fallen inside, slipping towards the hole in the ice over 200 ft. of cold blackness, the grey tripline just waiting between the sitting ones.

Not sure if this fits the theme as it isn't very scary unless, of course, the guy was buried alive.

Something very wrong

This little kitten was at the Alhambra in Granada, Spain. He looked like he wasn't going to be long on this earth. It was sad to see him and the fact that he was living at a palace, surrounded by beauty, but no one was taking care of him made it even more sad.

I don't know what happened here, I think this the first I ever came across a bird skeleton in the wild. I can't tell if it is one bird, or two, was there a predator? I actually made it black and white because in color it was even more disturbing, and yet fascinating at the same time

Taken during my recent trip to Bruxelles, Belgium. You have all those modern luxurious buildings where the European parliament is located, but life isn't so luxurious for some people outside...
Probably due to the very bad weather all the area surrounding the parliament looked pretty creepy, it felt like an abandoned ghost town...not what i expected, definitely left me with the feeling that "something was wrong"...

On a hike I was noticing things out of the ordinary -- hundreds of concentrated coyote tracks in sand, a strong and unpleasantly sweet smell in the air -- which made the hackles on the back of my neck stand on edge. I moved cautiously along the contact between clearing and woods, the smell grew stronger. Something was very definitely wrong here. All those coyote tracks had me a bit concerned. Then I came across a scene so incongruous that at first I didn't realize what I was seeing. As it resolved, like a photo revealing itself in a darkroom bath, it was clear I was looking at a scene of carnage. Body parts from many different species of animals -- whitetail deer, beavers, muskrat, Canada geese, turkeys -- all of them fresh and killed out of the legal hunting/trapping season, had been dumped in a confused pile. I shot pictures to chronicle this, but it was gruesome and gut-wrenching. This photo is one of the tamer ones. I call it...

This lake has a severe toxic algae problem. The lake was dug back in the early 1800s as a feeder for the Miami-Erie Canal. The lake is shallow and the bottom is mud, this combined with years of farm and lawn fertilizer runoff draining into the lake has cause this problem. It has really harmed the recreation business around the lake, and decimated waterfront property values.
