Pentax K-1 Weekly Challenge #5: Astrophotgraphy
Posted By: Adam, 07-21-2016, 02:35 AM

This is the fifth in a series of weekly photo challenges for K-1 owners. Each week there will be a different theme and a different judge. The winner will get to pick a prize and will also be the judge for the following week!

Currently I have the following goodies available:
  • Pentax K-1 notebooks w/ USB drive
  • Pentax K-1 t-shirts (XL size, back reads "my other camera is a Pentax 645Z")
  • Pentax K-1 lens cleaning cloths (each winners gets two)
This week's theme is Astrophotography and submissions will be accepted through July 31st.

@Slash392 will be judging, post your submissions in this thread (one photo per user please).

Have fun and show us what the K-1 can do!

The K-1 is superb for astrophotography! Given my latitude, I was surprised in this to see what appears to be the colors of the aurora borealis. Also, a nice surprise was the Andromeda galaxy seen above the mountain. ISO 6400, 25 seconds with the Rokinon 14 f/2.8 @ f 2.8. I look forward to seeing other great K-1 Astro photos!

The night sky at Cradle Mountain recently. Looking west, towards the "Dog Star" - Sirius and the constellation Canis Major. Pentax K1 and the DFA 24-70 at 24mm. ISO6400, f2.8, 30 seconds.

Eta Carinea

I know nightscape with milkyway is our main target. But for this challenge I wanted to show you what the K1 is capable of. Eta Carinea is the largest object in the sky of the southern hemisphere and especially the more attractive to me. This image is a stack of 16 shots with 60-250mm and astrotracer actived (exif 6400iso 250mm F / 5 10s). I used a special HiRes process to achieve this result. This method requires an extended version of PS CS. Mine is CS5ext.
Loading DNG in stack
Increase size, width and height X2
Align Layers
Create a dynamic object PS
Merge with Merge Mode "median"
an image is obtained from 9500x12800 after cropping with low noise.
After you can work the photo as you like ...
Oh yes, one important point: bring coffee, scrabble, cake, book, or anythings to distract you while your computer work. It's long long long ...

I moved from Nikon to Pentax to improve my Astroscapes. There much more for me to test out yet, always so much cloud in the way! But i'm getting a handle on getting the most out of the K1 i think! for sure me and K have bonded There's so many i could post, But this is fresh from last night! A very big moon and mist coming in, not good conditions at all for picking up stars! My Daughter..... " Lighting the way" - Norfolk UK

These are all great examples of how the K1 never ceases to amaze us all. The K1 has done to the camera what the Swiss Army did to the pocket knife so many years ago. I enjoyed studying the "Lighting the way" photo which demonstrates the versatility of the sensor, but it appears the flashlight is whisking away the last bits of astrophotography from the photo. I am judging Vote4Pedro's photo as the best example showing the capability of the K1 to accurately and easily capture an ethereal image using the K1 astrophotography feature. Thanks everybody for the great pictures.
