Picture of The Week (POTW) 437 — Jan. 8-14, 2017
Posted By: smf, 01-08-2017, 06:16 AM

Welcome to another round of Picture of the Week (POTW).

POTW is a great spot to show off any shots you take or are editing within the thread's date range. In other words, you can post your shots from this week AND last week.

I hope the shift to a Sunday starting day will prompt more photographers to participate.

Please consider including in your post any special circumstances or tips on technique or equipment which might be interesting to others.

Although I posted two examples of processing for the same image, participants should not assume any obligation to do so.

Please identify your camera and lens if that information is easily available to you.

Please invite other Pentaxians to join us.

Some rules:
1) No theme, just post your favorite pix
2) Six or fewer images per person per thread to prevent thread bloat
3) Any Pentax, Ricoh or Samsung camera, film or digital

The current host will invite a new host via Private Message (PM). If possible, the new thread will be linked to the previous one. If the thread doesn't start, please contact bluestringer, Moderator, via PM.

Here are the records of previous POTW thread hosts: 1 Peter Zack, 2 Eaglerapids, 3 rmtagg, 4 Peter Zack, 5 daacon, 6 Bramela, 7 mtnbearhug, 8 dantuyhoa, 9 gawan,10 roentarre, 11 daacon, 12 Kris, 13 The image of the cardinal was captured through the glass of a sliding door with a handheld K-S2 and smc Pentax-F 1:4.5-5.6 100-300mm. A posted version was processed in Smart Photo Editor, which offers many filters. I welcome comments and criticism of my images — by PM if you prefer to use that method rather than post in this thread.

Best wishes to all.

That 2nd one is very nice Stu-that background adds a lot of character.
A contribution from me. Regrettably, not able to contribute to last weeks POTW, as I was spending some time with my son who was visiting from the USA, and we spent some of the time in Pilansberg National Park, where the internet connections was poor.
My son loves snakes, and there was the obligatory visits to snake parks.

Blessed to see Leopard twice during our brief stay in Pilansberg

We just missed the birth of this little one-here it was attempting to stand for the first time-notice the placenta and the umbilical cord

And elephant landscape- this was a troublesome elephant imo, as it caused a road block the day before, and refused to let any cars pass, and threatened with flapping ears and aggressive stance at any car that approached close.

And it has been raining for almost 2 days now. A statue in the rain.

When the new POTW thread is posted, should the dates be Jan. 15-21 or should the stated dates be Jan. 8-21?

The longer time span would reflect the fact that images captured during the previous week, but perhaps not processed then, are welcome. (That routinely is stated in the thread's explanation.)

I ask because a Pentaxian politely raised the point and explained that narrowing the span to a week's dates in the thread's title approximately a year ago discouraged his participation. It seemed to him that images from the previous week were less welcome.

Before he wrote, I thought that stating the new week's dates (rather than a two-week span) in the title was consistent with the thread's Pictures of The Week name and that the explanation in the text adequately welcomed images captured during the previous week.

Please reply in this thread or by PM.

Also, If I continue to host POTW, I plan to post only one or two of my images in the introductory message. That would reduce the loading time for people opening the thread. And I thank the Pentaxian who made that suggestion. (Perhaps I would sometimes post supplemental images later in the thread, but I would respect the thread's suggested maximum.)

By the way, a reason for attaching an image to the introductory message is to have a new thumbnail image (rather than a question mark icon) associated with the thread.

Please notify me if you want to be my repacement as host of POTW and to invite someone to host when you no longer are available to host. I am trying to be helpful, not trying to monopolize the hosting. But I am willing to continue next week and thereafter if no one volunteers to host.

Thanks to everyone who posts in POTW threads!

Best wishes to all.

I would keep the current format- keeping it POTW- but highlight the fact that images from the previous week are welcome and invited. Otherwise it would not be POTW, but should be POPTW- Photos of the Past and (current) week. But really not a serious problem.
And it may be an idea, if we want to attract more entries, to ask the Webmaster to advertise this thread elsewhere- such as the weekly challenge or monthly challenge, much the same way that previous Project 52 Challenges are "advertised:" in current Project 52 challenges.
On the other hand, I've noticed there are a lot of new Forum members of late, and perhaps they could be encouraged to look and post @ POTW.
A hearty thanks Stu for hosting POTW for so long.

Thanks very much to all who have responded to my message. I plan to post a message in this thread after the new thread is posted. That likely will be this evening (in the U.S. Eastern time zone).
Best wishes.

The new thread is here: https://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/129-weekly-photo-challenges/338113-weekly...ml#post3882552

Also, after reading replies in this thread and PMs sent to me and after consulting Adam, I placed the dates Jan. 8-21 atop this week's thread.

I would prefer having only the current week's dates in the thread's title. But I am willing to give stating the two-week span a try, hoping it will encourage more participation and not confuse people. (I intend to post a new thread on Jan. 22. By giving stating the two-week span a try, I mean using that span in the thread's title.)

Adam has graciously written that he will promote POTW on a Facebook page.

I have begun including a POTW invitation when I send a welcoming message to people who have introduced themselves in the new-members thread.

I hope you will invite other Pentaxians to post in POTW.

Best wishes.
