Nope, the only limitation is that this isn't a P-TTL flash, so you won't get much automation on the K-50.

Use it off camera in SL (optical slave ) mode as a wide angle fill in flash.
Below are its patterns at 85mm and 24mm settings

In optical slave mode does it ignore the preflash?

I know the AF500 and AF 360 will not work in optical slave with anti- red eye, but I have not tried with p-ttl on the camera. I use manual and do test exposures here.
I will try p-ttl tomorrow. I doubt if it will work
Anyway, using off camera flashes, p-ttl for the inbuilt flash would not meter correctly if the slaves did not fire.
The above exposures were with the ist-ds in manual flash mode, and I stopped down to get the pattern on the wall.

Edit: I tried the AF500FTZ in SLave mode with the camera in p-ttl mode.
The image is completely underexposed, I think because the AF500 fires during the preflash and not during the exposure

I know that the 'SL2' Optical Slave mode on the later AF-FGZ540/540II models is a 'dumb slave' mode .... ie it responds to any strong enough light, and does not automatically ignore pre-flashes, so probably the same applies to the earlier models also ...... ?

I have one. It fires on the p-ttl preflash, unfortunately.

I tested a K50 in M mode with an off camera AF-500FTZ flash in optical slave mode. The flash fires upon the camera preflash. Using a lens with a manual aperture (not "A") will stop the preflash and the off camera flash will flash at the correct time.

A handy point and tip, thanks ! Could be a useful technique to use on occasions. Taking an 'A' type lens off the A position will presumably have the same effect.

The only negative I can think of is that I believe the camera flash might fire at full power only in that configuration.
