Arrival: June 5 in Yorktown, Va

No doubt about it, it will be a sight to behold...

From the official website:
"In April 2015, after a period of sea trials and training in 2014, the Hermione will set sail for the USA. The journey will start from the mouth of the River Charente, in Port des Barques, where Lafayette boarded on March 10th, 1780. The transatlantic crossing is expected to take 27 days in total, before making landfall at Yorktown, Virginia."

From NPR:
"The Hermione is set to arrive June 5 in Yorktown, Va., where in 1781 French and American troops won a decisive battle, captured 7,000 British soldiers, and turned the tide of the war. Lafayette's ship will sail up the East Coast this summer, stopping in ports along the way."

They need to bring back old time sailing vessels like these.... I think it would be interesting to captain ships like these. Would probably make for an interesting job.... that or helmsman.

There is a reason that there are only a few of these old wooden tall ships sailing. They are incredibly expensive to maintain. The U.S.S. Constitution just went into dry dock for three years of restoration and refitting. That should make it good for another 15 to 20 years.

But they are marvels of engineering and art. The beauty of them is undeniable.

Perhaps then, we could use modern materials, and just mimic the construction/design. Perhaps fiberglass, or polymers (after being coated in UV blockers to prevent UV decay of the plastics), etc...
