Just Released the 16-85mm

I just saw an email from Pentax announcing the HD PENTAX DA 16-85mm f/3.5-5.6 ED DC WR. I have a question for all of you experts. Why can't Pentax release this type of lens with a straight 3.5 or better yet a 2.8 instead of the variable aperture lens. I would love to have my old Access 28-70 with a full 28 through out in an AF and with HD lens coating. So what if it has 72mm front lens. I won't mind a little extra glass to get that constant 2.8.

Comments everyone!

Just got my email too.

It isn't a straight 3.5 because that would be a $1500 lens. It isn't a straight 2.8 because that would be a $2200 lens or something.

It is already 72mm so anything faster would be even bigger and more money. Though if i had a vote i would have preferred constant f/4.

But the 18-135 is also 3.5-5.6 and has only 62mm filter so can someone explain why this lens needs a 72mm filter for the same aperture and less focal length?

I must be missing something.

$749.95 usd

Its got to be a dam good and sharp lens. Same aperture (speed) and a lot shorter FL tha the DA 18-135, with a $250 price increase....

16-85 constant f2.8, that would be some "heavy" lens; if then, it would be better to have a "me-too" 24-70/f2.8 Pentax version lens.

Wasn't the 18-135 more expensive when it was introduced than it is now?

Personally I'd take the 16mm over the 135mm, especially when I consider the 135mm unusable wide open at infinity.

Getting a couple of mm on the wide end will significantly increase the size of a lens. The 16-50 f2.8 is a good sized lens - not only because of the f2.8 aperture, but also because it goes wider than most normal zoom lenses.

You're right, I suppose the 2mm on the short-end will cost more, and also with the extra HD coating....
