K-3 AF-C Test Picts

These are some quick OOC JPEGs to test the AF-C on the camera. Images shot with a Sigma 85mm F/1.4 which is an average lens for AF speed. I kept aperture at F/2.8 or F/2 to keep DoF narrow and not give the AF any margin of error. I used the center AF point and on the last shot I was on his chest, not his face. Did not have as much luck with the 9 center AF points, but I probably need more time to play with them. People who shoot action would probably have more success.

All of those shots were taken in less than .6 seconds. I was on 8.3FPS. The riders were past my position before I could get 8 frames.

Great results. Was this a fluke or was the behavior consistent with multiple riders?

Edit: I see the second post now. I'm sold.

These are on a long paved section where they could get up to full speed.

Thanks! The actions shots with the new AF are (for me, anyway) the single biggest reason to upgrade to a k3. It seems the last image of some groups tend to be out of focus - is that the AF or have the passed the minimum focusing distance of the lens?

Keep 'em coming!

I would say 75-80% keep rate to be conservative. But I might not have had my AF-C setup right.

I had AF HOLD set to HIGH and "Release Priority" set instead of "Focus Priority"

Again these are my first test shots and I don't shoot much action. With the right settings and more experience with this type of shooting I'm sure I could get better results.

I'm shooting most of these at F/2.8 or even F/2 so the DoF is getting really narrow on the 85mm as they get closer. The Sigma 85mm is not know for fast AF speed.

I probably should have been shooting at a higher shutter speed. 1/500 is probably not fast enough.

They look good to me, in particular for a shooter that is not an "action shooter". If this is indicative of the improvements, it is indeed a very nice result!

Regards!

That seems pretty great, better than most if not all previous Pentax DSLRs. Of course, a big part of it is the skill of the photographer
