K3 Contest Round 2: Dark Places
Lens: DA* 50-135mm Camera: K30

I'm always so torn when I visit zoos; while I appreciate the conservation and research efforts, my heart goes out to the animals behind their fences. The primates are especially expressive - their eyes seem to tell stories of longing and sadness.

Keitha, I love your photo. Did you shoot through chain link fencing, or was the fencing behind the subject? Either way, a wonderful bokeh that defines the space and condition.

Thank you! There was fencing in front of and behind the animal. If you look closely at the left corner of the nearest piece of wood, you can just make out the diamond shape of the nearer fence. I tried a few different apertures to play with how the fencing looked, but at the pivotal moment, I was lucky enough to have it at f/2.8.

Thank you! I see we had a similar approach to the competition - I get the same vibes from your excellent shot of the orangutan.

Stunning, heartbreaking & echoes my own feelings about zoos & cages.
Thank you for your eloquent voice especially for those who have none.

Definitely getting one of my 4 votes!

This is an incredibly powerful image, perfectly composed, and one of the best examples I can recall of putting DOF to the service of a concept. Good call to convert to monochrome; it wouldn't have a tenth the impact in colour. You got my vote!

Strong storytelling and very well done. Liked the B/W and comp. My favorite picture this round. (as the "Bereft" in the first round) You got a quality and style in your way you photograph, who is seldom to see. A lot of inspiration there.
Thanks for shearing.
