Ring Light

Yes I finally got a decent ring light :

So is the ring light a better option than a regular flash unit ?
That depends ...

I found the ring light very critical to set up .
If you move in closer than what you set up for , you really light up the subject .. If you move back a little , then you really darken the subject .
If you stick to the distance you set the camera / flash to , you will get a very nice image :

I havent used the ring light for very long ( an hour if that ) .
But what I have observed so far .

Very nice for maximum zoom ( close to subject )
Works a treat if you stick to your set up ( distance etc )
Not very forgiving if you change focus distance .

In most situations where you are out in the field , I feel a regular flash is going to work better . Especially if you are walking around and taking pictures as opportunity presents .
For me the regular flash is far less focus distance critical , and deals with changes rather well .

In say a studio situation , I think the ring light would be brilliant .
Unfortunately out in the field , I feel every break you can get should be taken ...

I got this one Cheap , on the box it sais $129.99 . That is a lot of money for the ring flash back in the day ( This being new old stock - so say's the add )
I am very happy with the performance of this one , it's not a toy . ( Hmmm , what vintage is it ? )

Anyhow , a few early thoughts on the ring light :

I guess this is safe to use on modern DSLRs? Is this a Pentax-specific flash?

Thanks.

I really like my sunpak ring flash. It has an auto sensor with 3 modes which controls the light so I don't have a problem with moving in and out a little with the camera. Also has power settings. Sometimes I have to adjust aperture or power setting to get the exposure I want, but I find it much more useful and accurate than a regular flash, and it has much better shadow control.
