I was surprised to find all these filaments when I collected a few dry specimens of goatsbeard to shoot indoors. Photographed with a Raynox DCR-150 on a Pentax DA 55-300mm ED:

Thank you, Terry. The photo you link to is close, but spikier than the kind here. Best I can tell, the goatsbeard that grows here in the Adirondack foothills is "tragopogon pratensis." For a long time I didn't realize what I was seeing amongst the other wildflowers growing alongside the roads. Here's a Wikipedia entry on the species, and a photo of the bloom here. I'm sure I have pictures of the bloom in my files, but off hand I can't find any.

Thanks, Norm. MANY umbrellas when the whole seedhead is in full "blossom." I found a few more photos of this pretty flower, which I learned today is also called meadow salsify.
