The suitability of the 31 for portraiture will depend very much on what sort of effect you are trying to achieve.
Remember that in APS-C, the 31 works out to a normal focal length, but in Full-frame it is wideangle.
Thus when we speak of portraiture, this point must be kept in mind. Are you intending to photograph a group of people? Or individual?
Note also that wideangle lenses will generate perspective distortion, which is natural. Specifically in the context of portraiture, this means that one must be careful when composing the picture, to avoid an "unpleasant" or "unnatural" looking distortion effect.
This problem doesn't arise when using normal focal length (FA43) or telephoto (FA77). Also, telephoto lens will generate depth compression, which many people find to be a desirable effect, especially for portraits of individuals.
Not saying you can't use the 31 for portraiture. It depends what type of portraiture, and what kind of effect/result you are looking for.

Looks very promising! More so if viewed in flickr.
For the FA31, very sharp in the corners when stopped down to f4.0 (picture #4, flowers in the top left corner).
For the FA43, impressive sharpness at f1.9 (ie. wide-open aperture), seen in picture #6, where we can see the individual strands of fur at the back of the cat's head.
Also, very beautiful bokeh, picture #8.
