FA50 macro Vignetting

Went out with my K-1 for the first time, so sorry if this is a common question.

When using my FA 50 2.8 macro (with aftermarket collapsible rubber hood), if I pointed the lens down at flowers it worked fine, but when pointed straight at a car or building I got pretty heavy vignetting. F-stop was 8 and 11. Does that make sense? Tried it without the hood and same result.

It's rare to see that much vignetting stopped down to F8. Could you post a sample?

I deleted them; I'll take some more tomorrow. I just didn't think you got vignetting with any film lens. As I said, I'm new to full-frame.

I don't have the F 50 F2.8 macro, but it sounds like you are saying that on a full frame camera, the lens vignettes when you focus on a further away object while it doesn't show vignetting in close focus. It's entirely possible that for that macro lens, it was a design compromise.

That's exactly what's happening; thanks for the response. I was planning on using the 50 as a walkaround prime, but it looks like I'll have to go another direction. The D FA 100 WR does not vignette, BTW.

The lens elements in that lens shift to optimize for whatever distance the lens is focused at. There is no "design compromise". Maybe the lens is defective/broken.

After taking a few more, it looks like it's actually the hood, even fully collapsed, causing the vignetting.

SMC Pentax-FA 50mm F2.8 Macro Reviews - FA Prime Lenses - Pentax Lens Reviews & Lens Database

The most recent user review is from somebody using it with the K-1 who doesn't seem to have experienced vignetting. My understanding is that the lens is built in such a way that it doesn't need a hood. The pictures I've seen from it (with various cameras) definitely have a special quality.
