Still Life Photos

After consulting the powers to be about perhaps starting a "Still Life Club" section I was told.... "The Mini Challenges, Games, and Photo Stories forum would be the appropriate place to start a thread on that, but the "club" moniker is best left confined to the lens subforum."

So...., although I don't have very many still life images to offer, I'll get the ball rolling and see where it goes.

Perhaps the best place to begin would be a definition of "Still Life Photography." Here's what Wikipedia has to say:

"Still life photography is the depiction of inanimate subject matter, most typically a small grouping of objects. Still life photography, more so than other types of photography, such as landscape or portraiture, gives the photographer more leeway in the arrangement of design elements within a composition."

I'm sure there are many far more inclusive definitions, so If anyone has anything to add to what they consider "Still Life" images, please offer them.

Its been a while since I played with still life stuff. I'll have to see what I can dig out of the depths of my flickr stream...

Then of course there is always lens porn, which qualifies.

Working my way back in time here... I haven't mucked with still life-ish shots in a while. This is somewhat surprising for me.

Here's one of my first Still Life shots that i put any sort of thought into. Of course there's the "NEW LENS! SHOOT WHATEVER I CAN FIND... LEGO, MUGS,... etc." You know the feeling.

Number one really speaks to me. I like it a LOT! I love the vibrant colors on "Sneakers." Deadly Brew is superb! Nice work, Jody.

Good timing - I have played a bit today with something that might qualify.

A 2CV made from recycled soda cans and other trash (from Madagascar).

Candle on colours.

A forkful of light.

Beaded bracelet.

I think #3 is my favorite. Very worth of framing!

Thanks a lot! That was the first one I shot, the idea that made me set up a "studio" in the kitchen today. The others are things I tried out when the camera and lights were at hand anyway.

I really like #3. The flowing line of the flame is mesmerizing.

Thanks, that's one of a bunch trying to get a decent macro shot of a match igniting. I put the match in an alligator clip designed t hold parts for soldering, lit it with a butane lighter and tried to get a shot while it was still igniting the tip. I wasted a dozen matches getting that shot...

A couple more from the past couple of years, I figured that was enough for the first post...

I have a few more but nothing else posted to Flickr, It might take a while to find them, I have over 150,000 shots on an external drive from 2 cameras over the past 4 years or so...Some I like pretty well and have never been shown to anyone. I took a rainy weekend setting up different objects around the house in front of the black felt background used for the sewing kit. Shotgun shells, a model car, I think some dice...just whatever I thought might work. I'll see if I can dig a few up or maybe take some more.
