I don't Think I have much to add with regard to film and scanning. I usually shoot Ilford 400 XP2 because it is easy to get developed at a one hour photo. I get them to scan it for me. Yes the cost is a problem.

I am very close to getting myself a black bag, a developing tank, and some chemicals, and do my own developing in my kitchen sink. With the marvel of youtube, I now know everything a person will ever need to know about developing tri-x. (kidding here.) That should help with the costs.
