See why I like the 105 so much? 50mm gives me the same problem you get with 28mm.
I'd like to get more loading dock shots ... but the problem is I'd get weird looks in Sydney holding a camera and taking a shot here and there ... I try and get most of my shots on the sly (as quick as possible).
It's just a matter of having people get to know that you're a shutterbug. What I do is carry around a big folder, the kind that has those clear plastic sleeves in them, and keep A4 prints of some of my better images in there. If somebody asks something or makes a comment about you taking pictures, just ask them if they would like to see some of the sort of photos you're taking at work and
show them.
