My wife does fire dancing with poi and for a while she made it my hobby to take pictures of her. It was a good learning curve for me but there was a lack of variety after a while. I did get to shoot a "Fire Circus" rehearsal and first performance just after I got my camera and I think I did pretty well considering the conditions and I only had the kit lens.
I actually enjoy my job enough for it to qualify as a hobby (just wish I didn't have to do it five days a week and that I got paid more). No I'm not a masochist, I work in a nursery so I get to be close to nature. I am lucky enough to have plenty of subjects to photograph without having to go anywhere.

Shot #1 is from my first 'shoot' when my wife and friends were 'burning' in Golden Gate park.

#2 is from 'Dream Time Circus'

#3 is from work.
