I would assume .TIFF files would be the most appropriate, but I have no experience with personal printing of digital files. I do know that .JPG properly converted from a .TIFF or other, wouldn't lose any noticeable quality. you would only have quality loss from .JPG from the camera itself.

most people don't realize that you can convert .JPG with almost no compression. I cant really tell any major difference between the ProPhoto 16bit .TIFF file straight from lightroom and the SRGB 8bit .JPG file I save in photoshop for web sharing.
